Typical Newbie plea for help

Hiya,

I just got GT3 the other day on er...platinum. Ok, ok, stop laughing now. Yes, you at the back.

Anyway, so far I have been blown away. I am not a car person at all, and the originals never grabbed me when I played them at a friends house, so its been one of the biggest surprises of the year.

Trouble is of course...I'm pretty damn rubbish. So I thought I'd add a plea for some sage advice from those more experienced:

1) Are there any downsides to fast acceleration?

2) I have been using the prize car RX7 infini III in the turbo championship. I've reduced its weight to stage 2, added in the custom springs and racing chip (maybe some other stuff, cant remember all the names yet) Anyway, i've had a play around with the springs and ride levels, but I still get a lot of skidding, notably when coming out of a corner there is a reluctance by the car to go straight i.e. it wants to continue turning. What have I mucked up/ how can I correct this?

3) I think I'm going to need to buy a new car if I'm going to compete in the GT chamipnship (err...the one on the right of the beginner lot) Any recommendations? Is any car particularly useful to have in terms of entering other events e.g. should I get a mercedes so i can enter the mercedes races?

I'm sure there's many more things I'd like to know, but they've skipped my mind for now.

Cheers for any suggestions / torrents of abuse / offers of marriage.

Hello and welcome to the forums man
Well you may need to buy some tyres that always helps the grip levels. Typically you should make sure that the front spring rate is higher than the back one, make sure you havent made the cars ride height too low. Another helpfull part is the LSD full customisation in the gears section that will also help reduce skidding.

Pyrrhic,

Hey, welcome to the forums. While, this may be a case of the blind leading the blind (Geez, I hope you aren't really blind - would that ever be embarrassing ) since I'm certainly not the stuff legends are made of...

Anyways, to answer your questions...

1) Well, this depends on what specifically you mean. Depending on the gearing of the car, a quicker accelleration can impede your top end speed. One thing that's important is, be gentle - try not to just mash down the button (try not to go full on the throttle) while turning and such - this will cause the back end to go out on your.

2) If you are getting alot of "oversteer", there are a couple of things. The easy solution is to increase the ASM rate (stability management) however, the experts here may try and steer you away from this idea. The ASM will do 2 things. It will help stop you from spinning, but the downside to that is, it can also overcompensate, thus, slowing you down too much.

Other things you can do are
- buy better tires - some form of racing tires - pretty much, the best that you can afford.
- check out #1 from above - be gentle and don't just jam down the button. Some people swear by using the right analog stick for gas/brake, but I've never gotten used to this. The analog-ish button works for me.

3) hahaha - you'll get a grand total of 30 differing views as for which is the best car. I didn't spend alot of time with the RX-7 this time around, so I can't tell you about it's abilities/shortcomings. I myself bought a Mustang Cobra R and with a few upgrades, beat the GT Championship, went on the the Amateur races and won a Camaro Race Car. Both are relatively high powered FR cars, so they can be a handful but with some practice and patience (alot of patience) you'll be able to pull it off.

:)

Hmmm, if you're in that very first stage of learning GT I'd suggest you buy a civic type-R (FF, no oversteer) leave it stock -that means no upgrades- (no noticeable understeer) and just practice at complex string, practice 'till you drop!
Then eventually try to run a fast time at Midfield an PM it to me or post it here :) ;) G-luck!

After that try the same with a powerfull rearwheel drive car.

And if you really want to get used to the driving style in GT3 complete the arcade mode first with as many different cars as possible. Then when you get to the GT mode you should be well experienced with most different types of cars and tracks. Yes the Honda Civic is a great car to start with you can even use it in the arcade mode.

Thanks, all the feedback is appreciated.

Actually, I think my ride height may be an issue, I think I'll set it back to stock settings for now. As for tires, I've only got the sports tires I'm afraid, and due to my distinct lack of cash it might be a while before I get enough.

Hmm, I have a couple more questions come to think of it...sorry but the manual is absolutley BARREN (is this only the case for platinum?)

1) Arcade mode. Am I correct in thinking you can only unlock more tracks by getting a gold medal on all of the ones unlocked on hard difficulty?

2) I'm sure I know the answer to this but...is there any way of changing the colour of a prize car? My game seems to have something against me, as it continually gives me butt-ugly machines (ghastly green. utterly dreadful. And best of all...a pink yaris. bleuurgh)

hmm...I think I'll go have a tinker with the ride height...

1. Yes, as you complete each 'section' of the Arcade mode races, more tracks and cars become available. You only need to win the race on Hard difficulty to get the credit, so you probably don't want to mess around doing the easy and medium races.

2. No. Sorry. Pink Yaris is it!

1) I believe you can unlock the tracks on easy, but if you want the really hot cars you'd have to get the hard -or proffesional- races.

2) I'm really sorry you had to go through the Pink Vitz (or Yaris) thing! And you're right about the CPU and it's BAAAADDD taste. Just sell the crap out of those ugly monsters!

In the arcade mode you get more tracks by winning all of the tracks that are displayed on the screen. Then you will get another set of tracks to unlock. I cant remember if it is on easy medium or hard. I cant remember, just start off using the a, b or C class cars dont go straight to the S class cars like most people do.

By the way
BOOOOOOOOOO PINK YARIS

get a mercedes later, if you want a really fast car for the GT world championship, get the Mustang SVT Cobra R....when it is fully modded it is awesomely fast

I had an RX-7 RZ and an Evolution VII for that series in Beginner. The Evo VII done the job for me, but I already knew it would, that is why I bought it. The Mercedes may be good for you though, get that nice CLK Touring Car in Amatuer.....

This is set up for the endurance race on Super Slick (slippery) Racing tires. It is a little soft to maximize grip. The car needs wider tires. This is one of 3 cars I've come accross that really needed rear toe. hmmm....I know my RX-7 has positive rear toe....I wonder if they designed even that into GT3!?

:)

Cheers for that E6KT2, I've given up trying to get that turd to perform decently :)

Perhaps now I'll finally be able to win the final turbo race...

Anyway, some more questions for you (hooray!):

1) I bought myself a superb Honda s2000 the other day (thanks to whoever recommended it) and it truly is sweet, but I entered into one of the GT races to see what the competition was like...wow. They were all rally cars, and just left me standing. So....I think I'm correct in saying you win a very spanky lancer from the mitsibuishi series...only problem is I need to get a lancer to enter. So my question is what would you do with 40,000c (don't laugh at my piddling funds, I've sunk a lot on upgrades....yes, thats it er, upgrades) buy a lancer or spend the money on doing up the s2000?

2) I'm sure this was possible in the last few GT's at least because I remember my mates talking about it....but is there any way to swap parts from one car to another, e.g. taking out the suspension and putting it in another?

You shouldn't need to buy a Lancer, they give 'em away with Cornflakes in the Rally series! Mind you, I bought one because the Lancer Rally Cars are all dogs to drive (you may need to do some setup work on them)

I tried it with my FC's. It didn't work. On GT2, once you had bought parts for a make of car, ie RX-7 FC, you could hook up any FC. I didn't un-install the parts and try it, though. The loophole may still exist.

BTW, did you try the settings? What did you think? :)

You sir, are my new personal Jesus Christ. :D

I only now just got round to trying your settings, but I am seriously impressed. I just earned my best ever lap time for the midfield raceway thanks to you! ( I won't post it here for fear of embarassing myself) It knocked about a second off my previous best using my favourite car, and probably more like 15 seconds for that car before tweaking.

It taught me a lot about setting a car up to, as previously when I adjusted the spring settings, I was a little "conservative" it seems in my tweakage. Tell me, are those settings quite similar for all of your cars? I mean, are the ASM and TCS settings usually that for you, ride height etc. I'll have to try this on some of my others...

I wasn't able to implement all the new settings because i dont have the LSD customisation or brakes, I don't know if this makes much difference, but Im quite tempted to buy them now to find out.

If you've got any settings for a honda s2000 or a mustang I'd be pleased to try them for you... ;)

I wouldn't dare tune a mustang!

j/k. a little domestic bashing!

BTW, Jesus Christ makes a great personal Jesus Christ. I just follow him.

Those are pretty average settings. I mentioned that toe out is a rarity, but it could be because I drive mostly racers and downforce can cure anything! The ASM and TCS are higher, but that also may be because it's a street car. FC's came stock with 205 series tires. That's pretty skinny. Also, FC's have 50/50 weight balance so the ride height and spring rates are nearly equal. A car with more weight up front, ie Viper, Supra, et al, will need a spring rate higher in the front than the rear.

LSD is about the greatest upgrade in the world. When one wheel spins faster than the other, it transfers power to the non-slipping wheel. Some use gears, some clutch plates. There are different types of LSD. BUT, the important thing is that it doesn't cut power like the TCS. It lets you put more power to the pavement.
