Hi Guys

Long time no post

Now to get on with it.

I have been hunting down a new set of tyres for my Mx-5 and when I was talking to one of the dealers he mentioned these.

Achilles 123

I am after a semi slick but don't really want to spend a huge price. Keep in mind I am in AUstrlia so all tyes are a rip off!

Now I have never heard of this brand before so I am wondering if any of you guys have had any expereince with this partilcuar tyre.
I can find info on there other tyres but not the 123.

I also noticed that it is supposed to be the official tyre of the Sepang 1000km. Now that could be a good thing but chance are its also a bad thing. Why would they pick a tyre brand that no one has ever heard of?

My other option that isn't to expensive seems to be the Falken Azenesis RT-615.
Only issue with these are they don't get a good wrap for wet weather performance. That doesn't really matter here much though since it doesn't rain much.

SO in summary does any body know if the Achilles 123 are any good?

Edit:
Hmm Probably should have put the tyre size in first.

205/40/17

And I'm looking at a wear rating around the 180-220 region, don't want anythiong to soft.

Oh and its for a MX-5 SE Probably better know as a Mazdaspeed Miata

While not answering your question in any way, get Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s or Toyo Proxes T1-Rs for road use for your MX-5. Take our words for it - we've had a Mk1 and a Mk2 both shod on both and an acquaintance runs a supercharged Mk2 and has had both on it. The only real deciding factor which set to get is whichever is cheaper at the time.

Similarly, if you're after a cheater tyre, get the Toyo R888s.

I absolutely love my Yokohama Parada Spec 2's (very cheap here too) - not as good as Bridgestone Potenza's in the wet but in the dry i've never had anything come close. Always wanted to try Toyo R888's tho.

Had Toyo Proxes T1-R's and loved them too but I felt they were useless in the wet! Maybe just doesnt suit my car/driving style though - Famine has had experience on the same car, i'd take his advice.

Oddly, I think the T1-Rs are better in the wet than the GSD3s - to the point where I'd drive through puddles for fun. The dispersal pattern seems to do the job perfectly. The grip/slip boundary is completely predictable and the wear, often reported to be a little high, is fine for me - I've done 26k miles on the current set and the fronts are still on 5mm (on a FWD car).

I'm just itching for an excuse to put 888s on though.

Ok

Since I forgot to put what size (edited that in to post 1) tyres I am running guess we will have to start again.

The Goodyear F1 is not available in Australia in my size.
In fact no goodyear tyres in Australia are availble in my size which I find a bit odd.

Didn't even look at the Toyo's to be honest so I'll do some quoting tomorrow for them.

I'll put down a price list of what I have allready got.
Note they often rebadge tyres they sell here.
All prices in $AUD and per tyre

Bridgestone Potenza Adrenallin RE001 - $240 I had a set of these on my previous car and found them to be quite good. Its just the Prices I have got so far are well scarey! Plus that car was FWD which means nothing when comparin it to the MX5.

Falken RT-615 - $215

Kumho KU31 - $215

Kumho KU25 - $189

Kumho V70A - Waiting for a call back

Dunlop SP Sport Maxx - Havn't bothered asking a quote for these yet. Is it worth it?

Oh and the Achilles 123 - $140 You can see why I'm considering compared to the others at that price.

When i had the Toyo's they lasted a lifetime compared to the Yokohama's i had previously! I had a set of A539's but they were discontinued and only lasted around 20k in total back and front + rotating through their lifespan!

Alot of peope told me they swear by the T1-R's and its all they buy but I honestly cannot fault my Spec 2's.

I found the sidewalls on the T1-R's to be really tough and I even had a slow puncture on one and never even noticed, kind of produced a numb feeling.

Treble 8's look the business and from what i've heard they are! But again as you will know pretty useless in the wet !

I'd suggest Kumho Ecsta XS or Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs. Wear rating around what you are looking for, but both are newer than the RT-615 and work better when hot. The RT-615 was designed for autocross and works on "cold" runs but as soon as it picks up heat from some laps, they grease up and lose a lot of grip.

I can personally say the XS work pretty well in the rain, provided temperature doesn't drop to 40 degrees F. But all these semi slick type of tire begin to struggle at low temps. The XS should be very comparable in cost to the RT-615s, while having performance that is above them a bit, closer to Bridgestone RE-01Rs.

Kumho Ecsta XS, I was wondering about. I saw good reviews on it on Tire-Rack though I am thinking about the recommended size that PB suggested to me ( detailed one) all I know that it was around 17".

Sorry for major OT,but zdenko, were you originally in eastern europe and moved to Australia?

Do you get Federals there? The Federal 595RS is a semislick for around the same price as the RT615s... or cheaper. A lot of people are saying good things about the 595 SS, but having had that tire's predecessor and hating it thoroughly, I'm waiting for long-term reports before I try them.

Oh, and if we're pimping our own tires, I've had three sets of Advan Neova AD07s. Great grip... almost as much as the RT615s... but they take to heat like a fish to water, and don't overheat or lose grip after multiple laps. Love the sidewalls. Have broken rims on potholes that didn't introduce the slightest bit of "bubbling" to the AD07 sidewalls. Treadwear rating is atrocious, but if you don't corner at 1g on your daily commute, they'll last quite a while. We usually drive them down to the cords in these parts (obviously, this practice makes them terrible in the wet, but even nearly worn AD07s possess tremendous dry grip). The wet weather grip on tires with 70% or more tread isn't terrific, but isn't as bad as the old AD05s... and not nearly as unpredictable.

But if the Achilles is really that cheap... why don't you try them out and tell us if they're any good? :D

yes we do have Federals here.

The 595RS-R semislick does not come in my size.

We also have the 595 EVo and regualar 595. From my understanding though these tyres are pitched towards wet weather applicitions which is sort of pointless over here.

The Yokie Neova Ad007 doesnt seem to exist here.
The new ad008 is only just launching here soon and only in 4 sizes which also puts them out the Window. Thats a bummer since I know a good Yokie dealer.

I am one of those people that say good things about them, fantastic tyres, cheap too.
