During the northern summer of 1972, the Tyrrell 005 made it's debut in practice for the French Grand Prix at Clermont-Ferrand. Cevert crashed it, and the car was not raced. Derek Gardner had wanted to build a car which was smaller and lighter than the original 001 - 004 series, one which would be more maneuverable. To achieve those aims, 005 was lower and shorter than it's predecessors. It had a more centralized mass concentration and inboard brakes at the front and rear to reduce unsprung weight and allow the wheels to react more quickly to road undulations. Stewart had a similar car 006/2, built for his use in 1973. In it he won the BRDC International Trophy at Silverstone and the Belgian, Monagasque, Dutch, and German Grands Prix and clinched his World title. This beautiful historic car, owned by Jackie Young Stewart, is today lovingly preserved in the Donington Collection.
