Like it's rivals, the Tyrrell 009 was very different aesthetically to the 008, as the 009 used ground effects similar to those used by Lotus in 1977. At the Argentinian Grand Prix the Tyrrell managed to qualify 4th and 5th but it was unable to finish the race but had proven it's worth. For the next few races good qualifying positions were converted to points finishes and by the end of the season the had ended up 5th in the constructors championship, equaling their 1978 result and this result was not matched again until 1989. Tyrrell utilized their second ground effects car, the 010, in 1980.
