Hi all,

I was wondering if any UK users have the BT Infinity service and what your experience with it is.

I had BT Infinity installed on Monday. Now I'm supposed to have a 40 meg download speed and I barely get 5.

Also, more importantly, I've noticed GT5 takes ages to load GT Life from the main menu. It also takes ages to load my friends when I click on the community tab.

My connection to PSN drops about 5 times per night but not to my laptop. I often can't get back onto PSN because of an error although the PS3 recognises being connected to my Router with 65% strength.

I'm pretty desperate so if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful!!

I may be talking out my ass here, but I believe your not supposed to switch off the router for like a week once the broadband has been installed. That lets the router get an idea of what sort of traffic it deals with etc.

If it happens into next Monday I'd ring BT, but be preparred. They are NOTORIOUSLY bad for doing anything. We'll send an engineer means, you've paid your money, he'll come to your house when he feels like it. Oh and we dont assure you he will do anything.

As for GT5, is it slower than it was with your old BB provider? Have you tried taking out the network lead / turning off wireless and seeing if it is still as slow offline on GT5, cause if it is your save file is probably getting bloated.

I hope your broadband issues sort out man, we are with Sky and, the service is ok, but the router they gave us is ****e. Every night it needs rebooted 4-5 times. Useless help and support on their websites and everything. Bloody nightmare. Was thinking of going to the Infinity service but we'll see.

40 megabits is exactly the same as 5 megabytes (well, close enough, what with stop bits and whatnot). Could that be what's happening here?

Yep - 40 mega BITS is equal to give or take 5 mega BYTES peak download.

Otherwise, you may have to contact BT what's going on. It maybe fibre optic but it doesn't always been you'll receive the fasted speeds.

Also if the connection keeps dropping out it may help to disable the "Media Server Connection" option in the Network Settings. Helped me out a lot.

I moved from bt to sky and I am getting 5mB more than bt due to the better equipment sky have in the exchange. Get into the router stats and see what they say

No its definatly a 40 Megabyte package that he got. It their new fibre optics that there are pushing out.

I literally live 4 houses down from the exchange and im lucky to be getting a meg at times.

I upgraded to Infinity because it only cost me an extra couple of quid per month from what I was already paying for BT broadband... I noticed speeds of up to 30 meg, but by and large, I haven't noticed much difference (but that is mainly due to my lack of necessity for such high speeds anyway!)

One thing that made a big difference was to plug the PS3 directly into the router using a cable, and thereby not using the PS3's wireless facilities... before doing this, I was unable to stream a simple movie trailer from PSN without it stalling several times, nor watch iPlayer or stuff like that without losing the will to live. Plugging the PS3 into the router directly really helped speed things up.

I reckon it's BT's routers that are the issue. The Homehub 2 my mother has is appalling - after two days of being at home it decided to start disconnecting my laptop after just a few minutes, and a week after I left it simply rejected my mother's altogether. Sneakily though, I happen to have a BT Business hub lying around and that's much better, so she's now using that instead. But of course they're both ADSL modem routers, and I've no idea what the Infinity setup is. If you can change the router from the Homehub though, I'd recommend doing so.

Amusingly, the £30 Linksys WRT54G in my flat (which theoretically is slower with a smaller range) has never let me down over the 2 years that I've had it. And when I mean 'never', I mean never. I don't think I've ever had to restart it over that time.

No, it's 40 Mbit.

Neenor, are you talking about the speed you get when downloading files? If so, 5MB a second is outstanding! Or are you talking about when running a speed test?

Go to www.speedtest.net, run a speed test and let us know the results.

On a Fibre package it's stil *up to, but it's shoud be nearly bang on as the signal doesn't degrade over distance. I have a 10Meg fiber optic package from virgin and I get 9.9 on speed tests.

Talk to virgin it think if you buy the 20meg router you get a free upgrade to gh 20 meg service

Thanks for all the replies everyone, I don't really want to wire my PS3 up to the router because it is impractical at my house, the router is is at the opposite end of the house.

I could pay to have the BT master socket changed to the room with my PS3 but I'm not really willing to do that either.

I'll give BT 10 days to see if the line 'stabalises'. If not i'll think about moving back to my much slower but more stable old ISP.

Difficult times, I may need to meditate for a while.

the pic is from my wireless laptop. If I plug into the router I get 36 Mbps down and 9Mbps up. Oh, and my PS3 is wirelessly connected and is roughly 3 inches from my laptop.!!

Ah, so the wireless is the issue here.

Good to see you are getting the speeds you paid for if you connect directly to the router though. Crazy upload speed too. :p

Just totally depends whether you want to wire up really. Looks like the only way to improve it, unless you move your laptop/PS3 closer to the router for a better signal, which may increase the speeds.

I wouldn't complain if i was getting 36Mbps down.

The wireless tech out there at the moment is so mixed that its really inconsistant. Especially when all it takes is one set of wireless TV senders to mess up a whole neighbourhood.

Consider getting something similar to Devolos dLan adapters, which basically use the unused frequencies on your existing electrical cables to emulate an ethernet connection.

It's worth schlepping the PS3 over to the router to see if your wireless signal strength is the problem. But I think your plan to leave it a few days is the right one. Too often I've seen ADSL instability for a few days after install, then it solidifies.

The powerline ethernet suggestion is a good one too, but it's a costly risk to take. Basically, you need to test this scientifically. See how your PS3 behaves with increasing distance from the router to trace the problem.

TommyWizard ask Sky for a new router. Mine needs a reset about every 9 months.

Despite what is percieved, the plan to leave it for a couple of days is pointless. Unlike normal ADSL which is monitored for the first 10 days, BT Infinity is not. What you get on connection is what you get.

If you're getting 36 mbps at your router, the problem is definately with the wireless kit or reception.

[Disclaimer : I may work for a large telecommunications company. :sly:]

I stand corrected. :)

You're definately 100% right about normal ADSL though, and if you keep preaching that message, it would make everyones life a bit easier.

Thier is generally a 10 day monitoring period in which your connection speed is recorded and sometimes tested during the night. The connection speed average, although an average closer to your minimum connection, is the speed you are then fixed at.

Top tip, when installing ADSL broadband in the UK, temp remove ALL extensions and connect modem to master socket. This will give you the best chance of hitting a higher average speed.

A significant number of people currently are getting less than a quarter of the speed they could achieve because of silly wiring issues in the home.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

My problems have somewhat moved on now.....I'm really struggling to figure it out, maybe you can help...

My signal appears to stay at roughly 65% and rarely drops now. My laptop speeds are consistently 15 down and 6 up. However, my PS3 is still agonisingly slow. It signs into PSN then it takes about 5 mins to populate my friends list.

In game, it takes literally 5 minutes to transfer prize money from my bobs, per bob.

All my problems are resolved simply by resetting my homehub evertime I want to use the PS3. I dont need to reset it each time I use any other device, just my PS3. Surely I shouldn't have to keep doing this??

How far away is the PS3 from the hub? Is it possible to use a network cable instead?

I never found a solution, but my old PS3 used to do this to a degree. The transfer speeds would be slower than any other device when with less signal strength and the network would take a while to repond, but our new slim PS3 seems to be totally fine. Not sure if it maybe a fault with some of the network cards in the older PS3s. Or it's something else not working properly.

It's not ideal to go out and buy another PS3 to see if it improves though I guess. But it's weird how the new PS3 totally stops all the issues I had.

TM Had the same issue which was resolved buy using a network cable. It sounds to me like the PS3 wireless sucks!

It does, infact mine doesn't work at all. It worked fine enough until one day it just didn't work anymore, so I has no choice but to switch to a wired connection.

Still having problems, I decided to bite the bullet and get the BT master socket moved next to the PS3.

Although this might help others....I called PS Support and they said forward the following ports:

TCP

80
443
5223
10070 to 10080

UDP

3478
3479
3658

hope this helps someone!
