GTPlanet, hello again. This is my debut to Off-Topic/Opinions.

I'd like to tackle the issue of uniforms.

Do we need uniforms or not in our schools? When I was in high school and middle school, I had to wear uniforms because... well, we had to. So my parents took me to the store and got me some polo shirts and some twill pants. From there, no one knows anyone's creativity. And the uniforms basically show on-lookers that we are dressed appropriately and that we are "family" to a school. Males wore shorts and pants. Females wore shorts, pants, jumpers, skirts, and skorts (shorts which look like skirts), and culottes (some schools offer them, but they lore a LOT more like skirts, but are acually shorts.

But since I'm in my college days, males wear almost anything they want. I've seen guys in cargo jeans, career wear, even some thong sandals. I've seen girls expose their belly, exposing their belly ring, short shorts (but legal), one-shoulder tops, fashion jeans with fringed belt, flip-flop sandals, and almost anything. So do we need uniforms? Take a side.

FOR: UNIFORMS? YES!

"I think uniforms will keep our youth knowing that they can't look like punk rockers and little American pop icons. A uniform shows that I am serious about learning and that this is about the same as a person going to work in his double-breasted jacket and stylish dress shirt. And for girls? They like to dress up like little Britneys and Beyonces while not dressed for actual WORK. So, to the inventor of uniforms, THANK YOU!!!" -Person A

AGAINST: UNIFORMS? NO!

"Yuck! What is this thing? I'm supposed to wear these stupid uniforms? Guys have to dress like elementary children going to a formal party? I can't even wear my Rocawear or my P. Miller jersey? And my girlfriend can't wear her baby tee with her belly ring or even wear a belly chain. That sucks, John. How come I can't dress up like I want to in school? I mean, how can you tell one person from another? Like what? One girl in Mary Janes and a plaid or khaki skort is no different from a hottie at the mall in the same clothes. I hate uniforms, John." -Person B

NEUTRAL: UNIFORMS? WELL...

"Uniforms? I can't tell you, John. I mean, at least you're wearing clothes. Just not the ones you're used to wearing. A girl who likes flip-flops and denim mini cargo skirts will just have to deal with school code. A guy into cargo shorts and army gear will have to change his style. There's nothing to compare here. Both are in clothes, just that the school requires one. Whether they are good or not depends on the person in question." -Person C

Now, use Person A, Person B, and Person C to answer the poll. And please reply if you have something to contribute.

Sorry, that just struck me as hilarious... about half of the guys on our campus wear thong sandals, so to hear someone say it like it's atrocious overexposure cracked me up. :D

If a private school wanted uniforms, then that's fine with me. Public schools shouldn't make it mandatory though.

for the past few months, I cracked up every time I saw people at my campus wearing them because there was always an inch of snow/ice/slush on the ground and it was generally -10 to -30 degrees outside...the dorms are 3 blocks away from the main campus building

meh, i dont really mind uniforms...but now since ive got a uniform i dont by clothes as much so ive only got a few pair of jeans and other clothes to wear out...so i dont really have a reason to buy clothes...other then that...people at school cant like make fun of someone for not wearing the big brands like enyce...phat farm...etc...

so it has its ups ad downs...the thing that i dont agree on is that the supplier for the uniform has a monoply over it...and can over price it...a golf shirt is 40 and sweaters are 60...pants are 80...and if you dont have the 'mccarthey' logo on your uniform your sent to the office.

I don't really mind uniforms because I've been wearing them throughout all of elementary school. Now, in high school, we just have a dress code. You can wear any button-up short, khaki pants, and a tie. You can also get away with cargos or corduroys.

i find my school uniform ofensive.....it makes me look like a business man. and in the hot australian climate, this makes it really uncomftable.

I hate my school uniform. The button's on my T-shirt's alway's come off!
I can't wear really big ear ring's either!

What some girls are getting away with in schools are highwater pants. Of course, other names include floods, capris, knee-knockers, whatever. I guess they are as acceptable as shorts or pants or whatever.

Well, next reply, or... whatever.

NO!!!!!! Just because a metal detector company makes a pr ad for their metal detectors, ( they had a 14 yr old wearing jeans and a tshirt, They acted as if the kid was actually going to bring in all the weapons they showed that he could hide in his pocket: A 44 magnum, a 45, two deringers, two nine millimeters, an uzi, and a 12 guage shotgun.)

THe company said uniforms are needed to prevent that from happening.

the uniform thing isnt really a problem at my school, so if they changed to uniforms i would be pretty mad.

whoa, im the only one for uniforms, maybe i should explain.

clothes in schools (lets say high school and under) are generally used as attempts at coming up with some sort of lame identity, invariably one of those represented in "the breakfast club." uniforms would make kids think a little harder about the possibility that something other than image matters. they wouldnt all become philosophers or anything -- theres still the mass media to contend with -- but i believe it would help kids be a little more unique, ironically.

besides, im not in high school anymore, what do i care?

nope, they are tools of oppression.

Exactly. Schools are so controlling these days they wreak of the putrid stench of a communist state of being.

I'm all for a bann on school uniforms.

Clothing is a way to express yourself, people who have a "fake" identity can still be easily spotted when they are trying to be something there not.

Now, the only exclusion to the rule is if you wear otherwise demeaning shirts like gang shirts, novelties with offensive messages (such as "Keep Staring... I might do a trick" or "You should see this shirt wet"). To me, they are the only exceptions. The middle school I attended actually disallowed skorts. But nowadays, they are looking more provocative. One girl I seen at a mall two years ago wore a really short skirt, but was actually some short-shorts hiding behind a mini. Had she pulled that off in school, she'd have to change bottoms.

Oh, and another thing. Just because someone wears a trench coat doesn't mean he/she will pull off a Columbine. It's... I don't know. Something American. When something bad happens, it tends to offend basically everyone until the issue is minimalized. A recent example was Janet Jackson during the Super Bowl halftime.

On the skirt issue... The other day i was walking up the stairs and I look up and not two steps ahead of me was this girl with this tinay skirt. So tiny, in fact that I could "see all the way to florida" as my firend so eloquently put it. Now, as a guy, this didn't bother me too much, but I had to feel bad for the girls behind me who didn't want anything to do with it. A dress code is okay, but uniforms don't get my vote.

We got a uniform in my school. I don't mind it, and I think everone else is happy with it. Its a burgundy polo-shirt and black trousers and shoes. The trousers are annoying in summer (yes, we have Summer in Wales) and we aren't aloud to wear shorts. The girls are aloud to wear trousers or skirts, but very few wear skirts :(. Unlike Straddy Comprehensive :D

My elementary school and high schools both required uniforms: light blue polo shirts and navy blue slacks for elementary school, and shirt and tie for high school. I think it's a good idea. The whole "self expression" argument is dubious at best, and I'm sure makes Old Navy and the Gap very happy, you good little comsumers masquerading as liberated, free-thinkers

^^^^^^

I never had uniforms, but I had a dress code from 5th-12th grade: no jeans or sneakers or shorts; dress pants and shoes with button down shirt with sweater or jacket & tie. The sweater/jacket rule was onlt in effect from 1 October through 1 April every year.

I never had a problem with it. It cut down on a lot of the stupid fashion and pointless debate about whether something was "self expression" or just clothes. It also meant that wearing a tie to work is a habit, not a hardship.

My daughter has to wear a uniform of sorts: polo shirt in one of several specific colors, embroidered with the school logo, and plain pants or skirt in certain colors. I think this is a little too restrictive: I don't understand the color restrictions, or the pattern restriction on pants (all the polos are solid color). But I can't say it bothers me or stifles her creativity.

What? That is just nonsense. I bet you call every authority figure you encounter a "fascist", too.

Fight fascism with fascism, eh? Sounds productive.

Nothing is mandatory at public schools except that they pass every dip**** that comes through the door.

Grades... your tax dollars at work.

Not that general, but you're close. There was a 17 year old freshman in my bio class last year, but when he turned 18 he left. Most people do pass, though, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I have a 3.9 GPA and I'm in a public school. Don't say the classes are easy, either, because I didn't notice any difference between the private school I attended the first semester.

I didnt use the word "fake," whats with the quotes? Anyway, instead of using clothing to convey your "real" identity, why dont you just convey it with your actions?

I wore school uniforms throughout my years in education as did most the children in london who went to catholic schools so in my opinion schools clothes don't bother me its like wearing suits to work or attending major family events like weddings or funerals

Could someone explain to me what a "gang shirt" is?

And school uniforms are stupid, but they're nothing to start a revolution about. Dress codes work just as good, seeing as how they ban everything that uniforms do, yet still let people wear what they like, or are comfortable in.

I remember back when I was in middle school, we didn't have uniforms but if the teachers didn't like you or if you were wearing some random colors, they'd send you down to the principal's office in order to call your parents for a change of clothes because they called what you were wearing "Gang Related." It's REALLY stupid how far they took it.

well at my school mostly half of the people are getting into fights because of what they wear

I was against uniforms until I went to my present school, where they are required, and now I am for them. I will explain why:

1. Easy-you don't have to concentrate on what you are going to wear.

2. Social-Believe it or not, for me anyway, uniforms make it easier to make friends. You do not have to worry about what "clique" they are in, because without clothes to differentiate them, they do not exist.

Anyway, that's what I think. If I think of more, I'll post them.
