Exotic Car Company Raided In Farmers Branch

Stephanie Lucero
Reporting

(CBS 11 News) DALLAS
Imagine spending six figures on an exotic car and never receiving the vehicle.

That's what Farmers Branch police said happened to customers who bought from a company called Unique Performance.

The company restored Shelby Mustangs, a limited-edition muscle car, for a price of $200,000 per car.

Monday, police confiscated all 61 vintage cars from the company.

Many of the cars could be worthless because the vehicle identification number has been removed. Steal plates with illegitimate numbers covered up the scratched areas.

Police believe the company was involved in title-washing.

Looks like Eleanor may be gone for good. Chip Foose & Carroll Shelby both have names tied to the company, so we might see their side.

owned.

but hang on, dont these cars belong to public owners? Why the hell are they even touching the VIN numbers?

Because they're criminals, that's why. I have no idea what they would do with cars with no VIN. They can't sell them, and they hadn't parted out any of them. What's the use in making a stash?

Are you being serious godzilla?

It looks to me that they've taken either stolen or previously crashed/written off vehicles and used them to make their creations. The vehicles previous VIN plate has been replaced and covered by a new one. This gives them a new identity so they can be sold.

TheCracker's right. Apparently, a lot of these cars are deemed salvaged titles. So, they scrape the VIN barrel, and boom, got a new, unsalvaged VIN.

We just had a 22 page discussion about this on an Elise forum I frequent of people trying to sell salvaged Lotus and pass them off as usable. There was one incident where a board member had to write off her Elise because it was involved in an accident while being trailered. Someone picked up the salvaged car, aligned the body panels and voila, you've got a new streetable Elise. The frame was deemed unrepairable by 3 Lotus dealers. In an accident situation, the passengers would die.

What? As far as I've known, it's Carroll Shelby who has been the sole owner with Chip Foose just having vehicles sold there with his name on them.
