Periodically when I'm scrolling through a thread with my phone I will accidentally hit a like button, When I select unlike it still shows that I like the post and unlike is still selectable. Is it actually unliking or not? I'm just paranoid of accidentally liking a very inappropriate post and not being able to undo it.

You can refresh the page to see if you have still liked the post or not - that will ensure you are looking at the most recent like data.

The unlike button should update the post immediately in most situations, but if you are accessing the site over a slow or unreliable cell network your request may take a while to register.

I'm not Jordan, so I don't speak for his reasons, but when you "like" a post in an argument, you don't really need to explain what the post says... anyone can read it for themselves and see that you agree.

You can "dislike" something for many reasons. You can dislike it because the example given is unpleasant, and you don't like the situation described. You can dislike it because you don't agree with the argument. You can dislike it because you think the argument is weak or poorly thought out.

If you're forced to post a response to the thing you dislike to say why you dislike it... then that's better communication. And if people like your post deconstructing the other argument... then... well... that saves them the trouble of saying what you've already said. ;)

Mind you... "Likes" and "Dislikes" can both be spammy if used incorrectly. But at least "Likes" bring good vibes. :D

I hadn't thought about it, but I suspect you're right niky. On sites like reddit, garnering downvotes very often leads to "why am I being downvoted?" responses, and just creates ugliness. It's much rarer to see "why am I being upvoted?" ;)

I'd rather not have either button, to be honest. But at least our like button is patterned after Facebook, so you can see who liked what.

Anonymous reputation and like/dislike systems are prone to abuse... as on Youtube... or even on forums. Facebook may have a lot of problems, but FB-style like systems are the bomb.

Hey @niky will I get a warning if I do this often instead of clicking the Like button?

👍

Typically, no... we do frown upon it when people make waaaaaay too many +1 posts... but if it's just once in a long while, we don't mind.

Here's my take on the "like/dislike" conversation.

If you like or agree with something, there's usually no need for follow up discussion and quoting it simply to post +1, , 👍 , etc is pointless. Use the like button.

Conversely, if you don't like or agree with a post, then further discussion is typically warranted. Don't like it, quote and discuss away.

Maybe it's just a problem with IOS and the safari browser on the iPhone ? I can see the page refresh when I hit unlike but still it shows I like it, even after I manually refresh the page...odd.

Edit: ok, it worked finally, but after I left the thread and came back, then unliked it again, it worked.

I don't think iOS is to blame; I'm an iPhone/iPad user and it always works as expected, unless I'm on a slow cellular network, of course.

That must be why then. Reception can be pretty sketchy in some areas around here...thanks.
