Unrealistic drifting with DS2

Watched a few clips and it seems that most folks use the DS2 for drifting, which I think is totally unrealistic. some of the clips (not all) use the steering to control long drifts (last turn on midfield 2) instead of keeping a constant steering position and modulating throttle and steering smoothly (which I find almost impossible with DS2)

wot are your thoughts?

Drifting FR cars very well and consistently is very difficult with the DS2, a wheel definitely brings you to whole new level of drifting once you get used to it. There is some really good FR drifting out there with the DS2 but like you said it looks strange when the wheel are moving back a forth very quickly. I do find that AWD cars are easier to drift with the DS2 than the wheel; probably because it requires relatively little countersteer.

i agree on yur view about how drifting with the DS2 is unrealistic, but think about it: it's only a game. yu really don't have to fully simulate drifting because some of the people want to keep the fundamentals of the game. if it was for reality, then they would give us a wheel and pedals and a manual shift so we can shift properly with manual cars.

although it may look like that the drifts don't look smooth, at least they tried. yu hav to give them credit for that :)

no, full credit mate, if someone can drift better than me with a DS2, hell, I'm impressed. Just GT is called the REAL simulater... so i personally think it should be as real as possible

Unrealistic or not, I don't have a choice.

D-pad vs. Joystick is a different argument than Joystick vs. Wheel. Money is the problem.

well, oh kay. i agree that it's called the real driving simulator, but it's a game. some people don't have the space, money, or time to purchase and use the wheel. they may think, "Oh! Why not I just try to drift with this controller?" the thing is, if they tried, then that's good enough. if they manage to become one of the best GT3 drifters out there using a DS2 controller, then that means they have the skill. IMO, i think that drifting is a skill that is obtained through experience. it can't be taught through class. if yu can achieve this from different routes, then it's like all roads lead to Rome: they have the skill of drifting.

Its all about understanding centripetal force. Mathematics baby!
Fient motion drifting plus hard breaking is the best for racing. You get to enter corners at very high speeds.

Whats your favorite method of drifting?

I like the pendulum or feint, but sometimes a superwils one like on the hairpin at midfield!
your right about the maths, driving a car fast is all about weight transfer, btw guys test drove new type R civic, WHAT A CAR!!!

I would say more physics or dynamics than math. In my dynamics class there are a bunch of problems with cars. In math well it’s "find the gradient of f(x)" "double integral this, triple integral that". Dynamics is more like, if a car has a mass of 1000kg and is moving around a banked corner of 15 degrees with a static friction coefficient of 0.8 what would be the maximum allowable speed of the car as to not hit the outside wall, if the radius of the turn was 200 m. Actually this is more like a statics question than dynamics but it’s the same idea... well maybe not… I’m just glad you said centripetal and not centrifugal like most people do. :)

My fav drifting method would also be the feint.
