I was checking my hotmail and there was a banner on the side for Atkins that said "Lose 10 lbs by July 30th*"

The * note said, "Safe weight loss is 1-2 lbs/week"

So the most you could safely lose if you started today would be 2 lbs * 4 weeks, 3 days = 8.857 lbs

So they're advertising dangerous weight loss...nice 👎

Don't confuse people with the truth. Or grade-school mathematics.

Basically, they're just keeping a foot on each side, just to be safe.

What's your point?

To lose 10 pounds in 31 days, you'd only be losing 2.25806451612903225806451612903226 pounds per week. This is far from being unsafe.

wtf is the Atkins diet all about? i have a friend who went to the ARMY recently and needed to lose a couple pounds and his recruiter was always talking about this atkin diet......

Atkins diet is about severly restricting carbohydrate intake (eg. bread, beer) and it works for some people, but it is for the most part a fad diet that will go away eventually.

"Safe" weight loss - depending on your definition of "safe" - is 1lb per day. Anything more than this is just water - you're dehydrating yourself.

The Atkin's Diet sounds like a load of horse's wang to me. Basically you eat whatever the hell you want, as long as there's no carbohydrate in it. This means no bread, no potatoes, no chocolate. Eventually the body, starved of carbohydrates for energy, starts to convert other stuff to burn - like fat, or more importantly, protein. People who've been on the Atkin's Diet long enough start to lose hair and fingernails and their breath smells like rotting flesh (a sign of "ketosis").

Still want to resort to diet gimmicks? Or does sensible eating and some exercise sound like a better idea?

2.258 lbs per week is out of the range that they say is "safe". My point is they are contradicting themselves

We're talking about a quarter of a pound per week. That's like .04 pounds per day. That's .64 ounces. In other words, it's nothing.

They aren't contradicting themselves. They never advertise their diet to be healthy.

Not to mention some people become depressed due to the lack of some nutrient found in carbohydrates. I think it has to do with the brain or something. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, can you please post an article or something with the name of the nutrient. I need to know what the name is, it's one of those things that is really nagging away at me...

Theres actually 4 phases in the atkins diet, you start out by eating only stuff thats on the acceptable foods list. I have been doing it for a few weeks and its actually working really good.

well, tell us if you go bald, your finger nails fall off, or your breath smells like camel carcass

My mom has been on the South Beach diet for the past month. She's not fat, but she felt she wasn't getting enough excersize in due to her now 50+ hour work week. I was looking over the book with all the recipies and explanations on how the diet works, and it's pretty smart. There are week long "phases" that you go through; each becoming less strict. The diet basically makes your bad cholesteral increase in size (the particle itself) to make it tougher for it to clog up arteries. It also increases your metabolism and uses foods that help both brain and body.

Are diet sodas the devil?

Well, it's one damn good horse wang. I can personally attest to losing 70 lbs. on the diet, and I'm happier and healthier than ever.

Scientests say that atkins makes people weaker. Women are less likely to get pregnant too.

Wow Jordan! 70 lbs! good going 👍

I tried it for a week but missed bread, pasta & sugar like crazy :guilty: the potatoes I could do without... Didn't lose any weight, but didn't try it for long enough. Now you've told me that though, I might just try it again. 👍 ]

Did it make you have smelly breath? That's one thing I don't want! 👎

Anything will give you smelly breath...if you don't brush your teeth!

That doesn't seem like much, but it adds up to over 1 pound in 31 days OVER the healthy limit. OK, you're right, they don't advertise Atkins to be healthy. They're advertising it to be unsafe if you read the fine print.

I've heard that a lot before. You stopped about one week to early - after two weeks of induction, if you're doing the diet correctly, you simply stop craving carbs. I just didn't want bread or sugar. And that is something really amazing when you consider before I went on the diet virtually everything I ate was nothing but carbs. One thing I found particularly interesting about the diet is the fact that the more you eat, the more weight you lose. After about the first two weeks, you really stop getting hungry, so eating more is actually a challenge!

I stopped the diet about a year ago, but I don't remember having bad breath at all. I drank a whole lot of water while on Atkins, and I think that might have helped.

You couldn't be farther from the truth. Dr. Atkins primary reason for publishing his diet was to make people healthier, weight loss came second. Carbs are at fault for so many problems in the human body, it's not even funny. Click here to see just a few of some of the diseases the Atkins diet can help prevent, and I encourage you to do some more research on the benefits of the diet on your own.

My dad's been put on Atkins diet, too. We were cooking together and I needed to test my baked potatoes on him. So I held it in front of his face "here, have a taste and see if they're ready" a bit later he looked at me in awe. "What did you just do?!" He stood there with the potato in his mouth pseudo-panicing. Right, after a while he swallowed. "****!"

And that's sort of the point. Almost every diet ever conceived works for some people - and if you're happier having done it, who the hell am I to argue against it. That said, I personally have never been in the position of having to (or wanting to) go on a diet and don't really see the necessity to lose weight to be happy - but with no experience of it I can't comment from a position of strength. But losing 5 stones* is quite impressive..

BUT (there's a but), no diet works for everyone. There is no magic diet which, if you follow it strictly, will result in loss of weight (or happiness, if it's associated) for everyone. If you're supposed to be 200lbs, you'll be 200lbs - sure you may lose some weight for a time, but it'll come right back again if you stray from the "programme". Sensible eating and decent exercise will put you where you should be - although "sensible" relies on common sense, of which there isn't a great deal these days.

Dr. Atkins' diet plan has been discredited by nearly every dietician on the planet as a bad way to live - we need a balanced diet which includes carbohydrates. There's an equally impressive list of diseases which a zero carbohydrate intake will "encourage" - but I echo Jordan's sentiments to look into it yourself (for instance, the site's definition of Type II Diabetes is fundamentally wrong - the most common cause is aging, and the first diagnosable sign is high blood sugar level, associated with low insulin levels, due to degradation of beta cells in the Islets of Langerhans - although a common cause for this IS high carbohydrate intake. Bad science, right message)

If the diet - or ANY diet - works for you, great. Chances are it won't - unless you're morbidly obese, be happy with who you are (yes, I know it's easy to say this from my position). A balanced, sensible food intake and some decent, regular exercise will do a lot more for your health - even if you stay the same weight.

*Note: In the UK we divide up huge numbers of pounds, by making 14 pounds = 1 stone. 200lbs makes little sense to us, but 14 stone 4 pounds does..
