Update message pops up while racing making me lose

I have version 1.07 or something like that. I don't care anymore about the updates, and just want to play the game. But when I am racing, every ten minutes or so the game blacks out and goes to the "do you want to update to version 1.19?" screen while the game continues on in the background.

I'll be going around a tight turn and the update comes on and by the time I can get it off the car has careened into the wall making me lose the race.

Can I turn off this annoying update reminder?

I have tried the in-game option when on the home screen...I press the start button and go to the options and turn off the "auto update." This hasn't changed anything however. The annoying update reminders continue. It makes me want to bite through my fingers I'm so frustrated with this game.
 
I know that, and if he doesn't care, then simply leave the PS3 on when you go to bed and the next morning you have Midfield and about ten new VGT's. And no hassle.
EDIT: That is what I did after not playing for four months.
