I've been working on a fully customizable car sim for quite some time now, and have recently released a demo. I would like to open up the project for content development out to the community. There is some great talent out there, and I have very limited resources. My goal is to create a sort of gran turismo like environment for cars, and developers to test out their 3d models in unlimited ways.

You can get more info on the project and check out the proof of concept demo on the official site:

Cheers

Woah, that looks awesome man!

Would there be traffic in free drive in a big city? :D
But seriously, the models look fantastic!

Damn, do you work in the games industry? Thats looking pretty good especially for a free game.

It's a nice goal to have as well, what sort of features will be in the game wth regards to driving the cars, races, hot laps, I noticed a skid pan, test tracks trhat test a cars smoothness over bumps and ride quality ect. Which direction will the game be mostly pointing in?

Thanks, ive been working on it for the past 4 years, development has been real slow since i dont have a team, I dont work in the game industry (although I wish)

The direction this project is going in, is to allow the full freedom to design your own worlds and cars. Traffic is a possibility, but not anytime soon, im really banking on the community taking over development of the 3d content so i can focus on the programming side.

for detailed info you can check out http://forum.rscnet.org/forumdisplay.php?f=468

Thats very impressive, just tried out the proof of concept demo. I myself have created a basic 3D driving game in Java 3D for my university project completely from scratch. I'd never even programmed a 3D game before so it was ummm interesting, but I managed! Unfortunately the actual gameplay never really progressed as I had issues with collision detection which wasn't as reliable as I would have liked. I naturally didn't have time to fix this!

Was hoping to continue on the game but have had problems and as I've now got a job, there isn't much time. Although I've been considering making an online web based game with the knowledge I'm gaining at my new job.

Did you write all the physics yourself or use an existing engine/libary? The way the car reacts to the bumps is very good :)

For the physics im using Open Dynamics Engine, the rest of the game engine is written from scratch.

Im looking into porting the game to C# to save development cost and time, and im looking into already ready game engines. I saw AXIOM, however im having difficulty optaining the source from their CVS, if you think you can help me with that let me know, it will be greatly appreciated ; )

cheers

I downloaded it, and gave it my little "I've played enough god damn sims to know whats good and what isn't" driving test.

Your base physics, weight, etc, all feel good, its your tire physics that really seem to lack.
It feels a little much like driving on ice.

Now, since theres only a parking garage and a Jaguar that feels like it's got the engine of a Tempo, I'm going to move on from the physics.

Your textures are unoptimized. What's my reason? They're .bmp.

Reason enough.

Now, to offer my services. I can't code, I can't 3D model. I can't do anything except:

Beta test, give advice, convert cars from one game to another.
:)

Examples: RX7 FD and Honda NSX Type S Zero for Racer, though those are WAY old. (Year+)

You should apply to a College that does this stuff. You might actually be recognized from a big company.

Hell, maybe even a company like PD, MS, or even SimBin could hire you.

Good work nonetheless :)

I've used C# for a university assignment and found it pretty good. It seemed awfully similar to Java to me ;) Except you could really easily make loads of windows forms etc... Never heard of AXIOM, but then I haven't really looked into engines for a long time. So nope can't help you there :guilty:

Making my own racing game was/is fun, the thought of making up my own physics  Something my physics teacher always said I was good at... :odd: :D

...err i graduated college, but as for working for PD, i really wish (only i dont speak japanese)

You speak of great talents out there. But I think that you are one of these great talents!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍

Don't go jumping the gun, this is impressive work he's done here, but it's normally a long and pretty tough journey getting into the games industry as a programmer. You may need knowledge of many different program languages, what I'd say to Skill is do your best with this, put in the effort even when you might not feel like it. Get it on as many message boards as possible and hopefully you'll be noticed. Get this onto people computers, get a good community going wth modders and such and you will increase your chances of somone in the industry thinking thats not at all bad. The problem with the market is simply the number of people that are applying for jobs and doing courses for it, they need a reason to be interested in you rather than Mr X and if you can get their attention with this by making it popular, that alone is a pretty good reason.

thanks... but im more interested in what you guys want to see in this game, theres a reason why i put it out so early, is to give the community a chance to contribute while the game is in development. Feel free to post ur ideas and how you want this project to evolve.

Originally i was bent on making a "fast and furious" style game, w/ real car physics city driving (which doesnt seem to be the case with any game on the market promissing that same exact thing), then I wanted to create something of the sort Driver series, but again real car physics, mods, setups and multiplayer racing... then i though it could be a regular racing game, except you drive to the track, and you can also choose to drive recklessly down back alleys, while keeping your mind on how to tune the suspension in order to outrun the cops quicker.

Now im thinking in sort of a car world, where you have your own car, economy system, you can buy/sell car parts, design your own car parts and sell them, and take it to the track, or drive down to the car shop. Ofcoarse the best part is that this is a free game designed to be completely customizable, everything from designing custom car parts in 3D studio max, to creating cities, race tracks, buildings, and even custom menu screens.

Let me know what your suggestions are, that would be most appreciated.
Important game design decisions are often best implemented during early development. Most commercial products keep quiet about their ideas because others could capitalize on them, but since this is a free project available to the community to contribute and develop custom content for, only the project itself could prosper.

So post your ideas, if you want to take part in developing car models, tracks or textures, youre more than welcome to do so.

Cheers

I think all of thoes ideas will appeal greatly, the fast and furios style maybe to lesser extent to the people on this site becase most are into Gran Turismo type racers over others. I like the last idea most I think, would that include races on tracks and in the cities too?

live4speed
would that include races on tracks and in the cities too?

Hopefully, im trying to create a driving world, where you have different cities and tracks, and you can drive from city to city, or drive to the track... the point of the city would be where you have garages, part shops, online meeting places, gas station to refuel your car... your house maybe where you keep your cars, car dealer... stuff like that. (if you can imagine grand theft auto, but "auto" related, with gtr's physics, and liveforspeed's online community)

I understand its quite the undertaking, but considering how technology is progressing, and that this project is already in 4 years of development (meaning technology is going very fast, and project is going very slow), by the time the project has evolved into a game with real game rules and logic, I think it will be very possible to create such a thing.

Can I ask will you find a way to support Pixel Shader 3.0 and HDR mode lol. And its all about learning.

Im looking into using OGRE graphics engine, so if that supports it then yes.
I've come to realize that writing your own graphics engine gets you nowhere... so why reinvent the wheel 💡

in the meantime... heres what im currently working on, if anyone wants to jump in on it, feel free, ill need some good pictures for textures

So you've been developing a graphics engine for 4 years and your now going to drop it when its started to take shape? :odd: Although I understand what you mean. I realised that with my Java 3D game that whilst I made use of some inbuilt functions, I would still have to rewrite and alter many of these to get the game to work the way I wanted too. My project was into the suitability of Java 3D for games developement by the way, which included a review of its performance for current day machines. In 1999 it may have been slow, but these days even a modest gaming PC can power a reasonable looking Java 3D game... there just isn't a whole lot of support. Just about my only resource was the official documentation. :ouch:

Anyway... that a nice looking Integra/RSX? you've got there. How many polygons so far? :) I've got a 1/3 built Lamborghini Countach I should really finish sometime (was supposed to be for my J3D game  )...

My appologies then. :dunce:

Well, its still looking great. Only hope I have time to play it. (College... :indiff: )
