I have a friend who doesn't have internet and the only way he can get it is to use mine when he's at my house. Therefore, he's been playing without the updates from day 1.

He asked if I have a way to update his game with a flash drive. Is there a way to do that without wiping out what progress he's got already? I doubt he has the log in and I figure that might be a hang up.

Also is there a way for us to play when he comes over. I have a second TV and would like to play against him, but I'm not sure how to set that up. Especially considering he isn't updated like my game is.

His PS3 is bone stock from the box so it would take a lot to update it.

I will guess it's going to go something like this. Save the savegame file to a flash drive. Then update the ps3 and GT5 to current. Replace the savegame file to get his progress back.

Has anyone has any experience doing that? I wouldn't want to do it if it's going to put him back to day 1.

No - also updating won't wipe out his progress at all.

A normal online lobby - only he wouldn't be able to go online without an updated game.

Just updating it would suffice. Backing up is always sensible but not necessary.

It won't.

Not sure if there's much to be done other than to just have him over and hook up the playstation to your internet, and then wait for it to update the PS3 system while you do something else, then wait for it to update GT5 while you do something else. Of course then he won't be able to go back to the older versions of each. Well, you can roll back GT5 by deleting the game data, if you really want to. I hope his system isn't old enough to still have Linux compatibility or that will get killed when updating(bad Sony, bad).

I think some people do update their PS3s by downloading the updates separately on a PC and then installing from a USB stick, but you can't do that with GT5. That could save some time at least. GT5 alone takes most people a couple of hours to update from its original state. It may well be worth it though, a lot of things have changed(some even for the better), even if he won't have access to seasonals and the login bonus when offline.

Backing up GT5(and any time-intensive game that lets you copy) now and then is a good idea anyway, even without updating.

Does it make a difference since he has no PSN ID and will have to make one?

It's good to know I can update it without losing anything though. : )

He definitely doesn't need a PSN ID to update his PS3, for GT5..... I don't know.

Just hook up the ps3 network settings for ethernet or wireless. Once he logs on to the internet with his console and starts the gt5 disc it should prompt for the new update. It works like this for any game when there are updates and your ps3 is hooked up to the internet.

But beware if he's updating from 1.00 it will be well over 1 hour to do every update, and that's on a good connection.

It's probably better to do the updates sooner rather than later, otherwise it's just going to take longer/more bandwidth updating it later on.

And he's missing out on heaps too!
