ISSUES THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED AND DISCUSSED ON THE GT4 DRIFT FORUM:

These are some feelings I’ve been sitting on for a long time. The events that have taken place here this week have been just enough to set me over the top and let them go public. I’m not here to defend or to condone anyone’s actions, I’m just going to say things how I see them.

I'm sure all the regular forum viewers have noticed an increase in the amount of locked threads due to flaming in the past few months. I believe most readers of this forum are pretty quick to push the blame on one member in particular. After all, he always seems to position himself at the center of the controversy.

However, I don’t think this is a fair description of our problem nor do I think this attitude of ours is entirely appropriate. Yes, there is one member who does seem to cause a lot of commotion and disarray in almost every thread he breathes on. But, I think he is always at the center of the controversy because WE insist on him being put there. All it takes is one “Initial D-ism” or the notion of comparing drift and grip times to get the flame war started. Give it about 30 minutes a perfectly good thread will have degenerated into a frenzy of spitting and name calling.

I know you know what I’m talking about.

I don’t write this to defend his actions. I’ll say it clean and clear right now that many of his posts seem out of place and/or bothersome to me too. But so what? I notice a lot of other forum regulars making off-topic posts as well, and they don’t get harassed about it to the same extent. Why should his one post spell the end of what may have been an engaging and helpful topic of discussion?

In other instances (as we shall see), it is clear to me that he was not the aggressor in the thread, but was rather engaged for something that transpired elsewhere. Personally, I find this even more bothersome than the first case.

Lets just look at some examples to see what I’m actually ranting about…

EXAMPLE 1

This came about 40 or so posts into a discussion on controller types:

Guy 1
It's been out for only 9 months, but No One Sleep in Tokyo, because already Tank-sempai can Break Into the Night, and Get Me Power in the Night of Fire so that I can get Back on the Rocks and Dance Around The World, but you'll have to Make Up Your Mind before I go from Station To Station like a Speedy Speed Boy, so Don't Stand So Close to me, or else I'm gonna get you like a Space Boy.

/lame attempt to be funny

Ok, I found myself necessarily involved in this one because my (former) name was brought into it. I addressed the post with a quick 1-liner, and then made an attempt to steer this conversation back on topic. I thought things were still looking good. Unfortunately my post was immediately followed by:

Guy 2
guy 1
/lame attempt to be funny
Actually, I would put it as a way to plug more Initial D into a thread that has nothing to do with it. …

I have to partially agree with…[more stuff about controllers was discussed]

Well, that was the straw that broke the camels back. Next came 30 way off-topic posts, primarily from 2 or 3 members who found it necessary to publicly flog each other and kill an otherwise interesting discussion topic in doing so. Neither side was willing to drop the issue despite a fair number of attempts by other members not involved to bring the thread back on topic. And neither side thought it might be more prudent to continue the name calling and personal digs with PM’s so the rest of us could continue our discussion.

I was appalled by how this altercation was handled (particularly because of the status of one of the members involved). Guy 1 admits he was just trying to be humourous – since when has that become a sin? He didn’t insult anyone in his initial post. And apart from being a little off topic, no terms of the AUP or TOS were broken. Have we just lost our sense of humour – or is it our common sense?

How could this have all been prevented? Just skim over the useless post and continue on the regular conversation topic… it’s really just that simple. Let’s continue.

EXAMPLE 2

First post of a brand new video thread:

Guy 1
some vid link

Featuring the Braking Drift technique. I refrained from using feint drifts except for a small one near the end, purely out of reflex.

Second post in the brand new video thread:
Guy 2
I think it's funny that you still think the reason most people around here give you grief is because you're an Initial D fanboy... You still don't realise it's because of your sarcastic condescending attitude and nonsensical posts... Nothing to do with Initial D at all... You do post a lot of Initial D related material in unrelated threads, but it's the posting unrelated material that's the problem, not the Initial D material itself... This is obvious to everyone but yourself... Even the IDW admin (and some of the members) realised this...

Thought I would get that out of the way.. Now for the vid: …

Where did that stab in the eyes come from?
I know there’s some history between the two members, but I don’t feel that Guy 2 was justified in his attack on Guy 1. There was nothing provoking in the video or the first post – it came totally out of past occurences. If Guy 2 needed so badly to let Guy 1 know what he thought then it could have gone through the PM system. Guy 2 is mature enough and has been on the forums long enough to know that. Bringing it out into the open invites the rest of the forum onlookers into the dispute. Thankfully these comments were disregarded and the thread continued normally...for about another 8 posts or so.

EXAMPLE 3

This one is still going on….
Second post in a new thread

Guy 1
meh

Now, the video I'm making...that's interesting...well maybe not...but it's a lot more interesting that this...

...what are we talking about again? *yawn* :indiff:

Ok, Guy 1 is really just making a pest of himself here… there’s not a doubt in my mind about that, and all of you should realize that too. But rather than just ignoring or allowing the mod squad to tackle it, people start typing on impulse and all of a sudden 23 off-topic posts pop up in the space of about 12 hours.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

There’s numerous other examples I could pull-out. I only chose these few because they stuck out in my memory and I could recall where they were – most of all because they illustrate what I want to say.

So, the point of this post:

He is not the sole cause of this problem of ours. We, as regulars on the GT4 drift forum are all playing some part. Unless you are brand new to the forums and truly have no idea what or who this post is referring to, then you’re a part of it in some way or another. GTP staff included, no exemptions or exceptions.

Everyone on either side of this issue needs to grow up a little bit and truly ask yourself if what you’re thinking of posting is going to contribute to the intended conversation topic. Unless your answer is a definite yes, then you have no business hitting the ‘submit reply’ button. I’m sick of walking into threads about … B-spec drifting for instance, just to see a bunch otherwise intelligent people acting like an angry mob of prepubescent idiots in a mudwrestling match.

Yes, I realize everyone is tired of all the ID analogies and drift vs grip ideas that he brings into threads – I am too. Then I look at what some of you type in your responses in these threads gone bad and I truly can’t picture sane human beings on clean air behaving this way. Stop using the anonymity the internet provides as an excuse to be as immature as you please.

Why can’t we learn to just look beyond his comments and on to the next post. Flaming him for his actions brought us no good thus far. His behaviour has not changed, and frankly I believe he likes the attention it gets him.

Let the ignorant be ignorant, and leave the childish to be childish – there’s nothing here forcing you to stoop to their level. Keep your dignity intact and simply ignore it. Moreover, if you are not involved in an off-topic dispute, then don’t take it upon yourself to become involved in it.
Simply stated: mind your own business.
If you absolutely cannot tolerate what has been said or has transpired do the sensible thing and either report the post or handle the matter with PM’s.

I want this problem to end now. It has gone on for far too long already and I’m not afraid to say that it has been handled miserably by everyone here. I used to enjoy coming to the forums and discussing the topic of the day with all of you. But lately it has been impossible to even discern what the topic of discussion is amongst all the flaming.

I’m not saying we all have to pretend to be best friends, people are allowed to have their differences. All I want is for this forum to regain its ability to host discussions and/or debate without people making it personal or becoming offended at the first mentioning of the word “tofu” or “Takumi”. This should not be too much to ask.

And to him: don’t be chuckling to yourself thinking you’re getting off lightly in this post. You need to clean up your act or no one is going to put any stock in a single word you type.

Guy 1 had done this to himself. He came to the boards as an arrogant child looking to start trouble based on things he saw in a japanese cartoon. I wouldn't have minded him had he not shoved Initial D down my throat basically, and when I told him I didn't want to hear it anymore, he went over to another forum (IDW) and had people flame the IDM boards using lies that he craftily created using convienient sniplets of AIM conversations. And my god the drama he creates around himself is absolutely absurd.

I'm slightly more biased because of the aim convo's I've had with him, and how they were used against me. It aggrivated me just to see him post on this forum as if he really cares about the art of drifting, when all he cares about is mimicing some anime and slamming references in every possible post he can, as if he was the unofficial spokesman for Initial D. This is the kind of person the GTPlanet forums does NOT need on the drifting forums. He is the poster child of what everyone dislikes about the drifting community.

I agree with you to come extent, a good portion of the current gripes with Guy 1 are basically unfounded and a lot of people are just using him as a scapegoat to start trouble at this point. But he deserves it anyway, so its all good. Down with Guy 1.

I completely agree that he has arrived in his current situation because of his actions. And I'll agree that he can be forceful with his opinions, and they do quite often require some form of reply. But it should never become as lengthy or as heated as people have allowed it to become in the past - at least not where it can be viewed by all.

I don't want to put anyone in the right or in the wrong with this thread. I think as a community we all share close to equal responsibility for what has transpired. To those that I have singled out in the examples, I appologize for making a demonstration of you.

I needed to say what was on my mind.

Werd. I've said my fair share concerning "Guy 1," but I'd rather look past his posts than take the time to respond anymore. If someone doesn't respond to reason, theres no reason to respond to them anymore. If you really REALLY don't like what someone has to say, go into their User Profile and click "Add ____ to Your Ignore List." All their posts magically disappear and you don't ever have to see anything from that user ever again. The GTP Mute button, use it if you really feel you have to.

Think carefully about what your saying, one person is causing a large portion of the problems in the GTP drifting community because of his actions, and your suggesting we all change and accomodate one person? Sorry but to me the choice is and always has been clear, ban him. He clearly cares nothing about drifting. Its been shown time and time again that all he wants to do is cause drama, and he does it consistantly.

People are tired of him, they don't want him around anymore. I for one don't blame any of them. I come to this board to look at videos of people drifting, read about drifting, and talk about drifting. Why in the hell would I want to talk about Initial D? There are OTHER forums for that, this is NOT one of them.

He knows Grip vs drift was beaten into the ground, or he should have, but still that was the first thing he brought up here. Lap times and drifting do not go together, and for weeks he insisted on posting about it. And then every other thread he replies to has Initial D in it.... and for the most part im very sure that these posts had nothing to do with Initial D.

There is a time and place for everything, and apparently he cannot understand this, and consistantly posts things that he knows will annoy people simply to cause trouble. So why bother trying to make people accept a problem, when you can just get rid of the problem, and make life easier for everyone.

BL, you're right on target. I for one could've handled all these situations much better. Again, I'm not excusing my or anyone else’s behavior, just saying that I could've handled it better.

Now, I'm going to get MUCH stricter on flaming around here. I simply am not going to let it happen. Check a few of the recent threads with "flames" in it to see what I mean. :sly:

Unless Guy 1 grabs my attention with personal insults, or speciffically targets me with Unexplainable reason, i will not retaliate.
And even if he does, ill take it to PM.

To me it just seems a habbit for everyone to flame him about any post he makes, He's not worth our/My time.

So In Regard to Boundary_layers initial concern, ill agree. It's time we Ignore, Completely.
There's always another solution, BAN him.

BL- try not to let it get to you.

This is the internet, notorious gathering place for morons. If you let idiots bother you online, then you'll be bothered at nearly every website you visit.

Hahahha.. Ok, that was funny :dopey: It came really arrogant..

I have seen a flame war on the forum once, with a drifting video. They didn't liked it and the maker was really pissed off.. So started calling names and stuff... I don't think it happends much here, we are lucky with such good moderators 👍

As I see it, there are two kinds of "bad vibe" posters. One that's unhappy with the rules and regulations and voice opinions, and the other's just being disruptive without really tossing any arguments into the mix. The first category's problems could easily be resolved through a couple of PMs, but the latter may be harder to deal with. If this is who I think it is, he's seems to have fallen into the second category quite a few times.. and the way I see it, some reaction was definitely called for... and it's not like the poster hasn't been warned numerous times already.

I see this as a forum for education and sharing experiences, ideas and notes on personal progress... so inciting flaming and total irrelevance can be very disruptive indeed. The big point to me are the multiple warnings that were given, and I sort of waited for this topic to be addressed in some big way. In my eyes, all this would easily qualify for any sanctions to be taken.. but I don't know what's been said in PMs and IMs, so there may be more to this than I think.

BL has some good points there,

I, for one, ignore most of his posts until such time as they directly impact on me, or something I'm passionate about... Like the NEW DPC about to be launched.... The quote BL used was from that particular thread of mine...

Funny thing here is that we ALL know who guy1 is, and we're ALL getting really annoyed with him.... SO, why don't we ALL just ignore him; after reading the thread, I know I'm going to from now on... Even if his post does directly impact me...

Well said. I've come to ignore the we-todd-did people in life, but when its a page worth of bickering between useful posts, it becomes harder and harder. It takes a village people, or in this case, everyone here at GTPlanet.com to change things for the better.

P.S. INITIAL D ROCKS!!!
(lol, kidding, I actually don't know what Initial D is, nor do I care)

by the way, this whole forum is getting a little weak. For three weeks, I have only been seeing threads about: Opel Speedster 200-point race, B-spec top speed issue, red dot while loading, realistic tires...blah blah blah... All these have already been written about and it is getting a little boring looking at thses everyday. People just don't know how to use the "search" button. *Hint to people: if the word returns no results, then try using a different word. Ex: "realistic tires" change to "simulation tires" or something like that. :indiff:

I think people have started to see this as a challenge. Be the first one to flame a n00b with off-topic threads/posts and you think you've got respect from other regulars because you seem to know the rules VERY good.

I'm kinda REALLY REALLY glad BL (or TS) made this thread cause guys...it's going out of control.

@KiwiBoy: ......WTF DO YO....no lol just kidding hehe;)
You have to learn drifting, thats why we're here, we're kinda like teachers and students at the same time. Teachers will repeat the same things for their whole life, thats why I think it's a very boring job lol:lol: But we...unfortunatly...are pretty much the same. We gotta teach people the same things OVER AND OVER again. It's our "job" here and we gotta accept it....no other way to do it.

And btw, teachers dont scream students out of the class-room because they've asked something for the second time;) Think 'bout that.

I thought u guys where talking about me because i always piss every one off and apologise to every one i have snaped at i realise what an ass i am being sorry guys

I completely agree... and I am a bit appaled that one of my completely relavent posts posts was brought into this... Guy 1 made an ignorant remark and I decided to try and finaly drill it into his head that Initial D has nothing to do with the way he is treated... Pure and simple... BL, you are right for the most part, but we can not sit by idly, and let people like him ruin our forum... Besides, he is gone now, so let's just drop this nonsense...
