I mentioned yesterday of the 16 PS3s that one astrophysicist has linked up to simulate black hole collisions, and it seems the potential of the powerful PS3 hasn't escaped the attentions of the US Air Force.

It seems that the Americans either fancy some real hardcore gaming action, or they want to use the incredible power of the PS3 in other ways, as they are actively trying to snap up a huge 300 of the damn things.

According to the FBO site, the purchase has been classified as "general purpose information technology equipment," which doesn't give too much away in terms of what they plan to do with 300 hefty machines.

If 16 consoles is all it takes to simulate a black hole collision, then what on earth could 300 all linked together do? Should we expect a cure to the world's ills sooner rather than later thanks to the PS3? Or do they fancy a REALLY huge game of Call of Duty 4?

They clearly just want to have a mega gaming session as you said!

Just tax it as general purpose equipment!

I wonder if Sony are going to make these especially or if they are just off the shelf...

You could probably use 3 to run a top of the range flight simulator with hydraulic movement. It'd probably put out better graphics than the one I went in aswell.

You know, thinking about it isnt it a bit insulting to Microsoft a home grown American company to not be using their kit...? Whats wrong with 300 360's?

After all the US military tend to get everything from US companies for, you know, patriotic reasons or something.

Just think of the amount of red they would see from 300 360's.

 True, I can imagine if a 360 can't cope with overheating in your living room it isn't going to stand a chance in the armed forces!.... Baghdad in summer anyone?!

Just recently, actually, the US air force needed to contract a company to build some new airplanes, to replace the fuelers that they have now, and they went with a company outside of the U.S. to do so, and American companies, such as Boeing got really pissed off. But, I imagine that this contract would cost a lot more than what it would to buy 300 ps3's.

300 360's would probably cause a huge fire. lol imagine if they use all the ps3's for gaming. all of them playing cod4 or something like that.

That would be totally awesome. Just send the PS3s all around the world, and have the biggest CoD4 match EVAR! then they could design life, might help with the AIDS pandemic, I guess.

Yeah the Airbus contract was a real shocker. Certainly gonna boost the British aerospace industry though :D

I think since Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming out. The navy wants to take blue prints of the two robots that are found in game. Next we going see them trying to rule the world!

A main reason for this is because it really stimulates the economy. Keeping the $$$ in the US makes sense and helps their citizens. It also means that any orders for the equipment from parties external to the US further secures the future of the US defenSe (not defenCe like in the UK) industry.

Also there's a long standing trust that the work US firms will better fufill the needs of the US military in providing capability. Even if some of it does fall off the back of an MC130H

Don't quote me on this, but wasn't there even some law in place stating that defense equipment must be procured from within the US and only sourced in if no US firm was able to fit the bill for capability??

I can't really blame them at being pissed to be fair! This is MEGA bucks we're talking here and between them and Lockheed they've cleaned up in the last god knows how many years!

....

Wouldn't it be nice if they rented out half of those to whoever the US is at war with and instead of actually waging a real war use a PS3 wargame to battle it out.
You would save a lot of taxpayers money and lives.

Oh... wishful thinking.

After Windows 98 crashed their strategic command computer during the war with Canada they canceled their contract with Microsoft. I would show the documentary video, but it violates AUP.

Until the losing side accuses the winning side of cheating and then they have a back and forth and then a real fight, over the videogame, breaks out.
