In an interview with Venture Beat, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime came out with what can only be described as some 'rather strange' comments in regard to used games and the sale of used goods.

VB: Used games are coming up as a big issue again. Why?

RFA: More and more retailers are experimenting with the used game model. We don’t believe used games are in the best interest of the consumer. We have products that consumers want to hold onto. They want to play all of the levels of a Zelda game and unlock all of the levels. A game like Personal Trainer Cooking has a long life. We believe used games aren’t in the consumer’s best interest.

VB: Because?

RFA: Describe another form of entertainment that has a vibrant used goods market. Used books have never taken off. You don’t see businesses selling used music CDs or used DVDs. Why? The consumer likes having a brand-new experience and reliving it over and over again. If you create the right type of experience, that also happens in video games.

VB: Could this be rectified if the retailers share some of that used game revenue with the publishers?

RFA: That could make it more palatable. But we just think it’s a bad idea. The one retailer that has a substantial business in this has figured out a way that is effective for the consumer. That’s tough for other retailers experimenting with this, in part because their employees don’t have the expertise in this market.

So used book sales has never taken off!

You don't see businesses selling used CD's or DVD's!

Errrr, exactly were does Reggie go shopping, because I'm fairly certain that almost every member here knows of a place you can buy second hand books, CDs and DVD.

Its not a case of taking off, but rather well established in all three counts.

As for used games not in the best interest of consumers, exactly how are they not in the best interest of consumers. I think he has got manufacturers and consumers mixed up here.

Try: Used games are not in the best interests of Nintendo, especially when they would much rather have you buy them again on VC. Or the Wiireleases.
There have been used games shops since there have been games. The one around the corner celebrated its 25th Anniversary a few months ago.

This guy is obviously an idiot...

He has never heard of Funcoland, EBGames, GameStop and other countless used game retailers worldwide.

...or Blockbusters. Of the two stores near me, and one of those is huge, both have half their shelves full of used games and DVD's. I suspect a major part of their income comes from the used market. If i've heard good things about a not so recent game from a friend or colleague, then i'm likely to pick it up secondhand rather than new. If i enjoy the game then i'll probably end up buying the sequels. So in effect, the used market has made the games manufacturers money that they probably would'nt have seen if it wasn't for the used market.

they're just yarping 'cause they're losing money. unfortunately, that's all that's on some company's minds.
Used Games are also the alternative to spending over a hundred dollars for something new that turns out to be a dud. plus some of us like to wait untill the price comes down, or go back and buy a used console later.

the author is sounding like they've never heard of "used" in anything!
HELLO! never had to buy on the cheap till now?

I must say, it's been a while since I've bought a new game/book/film/CD. All the recent media I've bought has been off Amazon marketplace and everything was listed as "used". Makes sense, when you can pay less than 3 quid for a PS2 game or CD including postage. Unless something has just come out or unless you can't guarantee that something will be in working order (not a worry on amazon when someone has 95%+ positive feedback on thousands of sales).

Last used game I bought was Mariokart for the DS, from GAME. A tenner cheaper than brand new and in as-new condition.

As Scaff said at the top, I think the chap has got confused between consumers and manufacturers...

I believe that Nintendo games are the best and buying some original ones is the best thing that anyone can do. If you are really short on money or cannot find the game you want, then maybe you should consider buying some used Nintendo games.

Used games not in the consumers Nintendo's best interest say Nintendo - Fixed.

Another company about to jump on the online pass bandwagon then, with their new console.

Nintendo ought to make every day a steam sale then.

So Nintendo believes that when a $50 game is purchased it should never be relinquished or sold period. I find it greedy that first EA and now other companies have decided that the best way to make the consumers happy is to make them pay $50-$60 for a game and when people grow tired of the game, throw it away in the trash as opposed to letting other people buy a slightly worn game at a lower price yet still have full access to the game.

They'll be changing everything to digital before long to end that. As much as I hate to say it, in about 6-7 years from now they'll be shutting down the used retailers.

Ad-spam's don't care how old a thread is.

They are now banned and you guys can enjoy the history.

So, an add bumped this thread? :odd:

I would disagree with that, because it would entail all of the console users having internet access so that they'd be able to play downloaded games. That just isn't going to happen, imo.

The games industry won't go 100% digital anytime too soon, people enjoy having physical media, collectors editions, etc. too much to switch completely.

I know the article is a few years old but RF-A is one of the top 2 or 3 tools in the gaming industry.

Naturally Nintendo will have a skewed view on this after all consumers have been buying the same two or three games from them for years brand new. We seem to have rescued the princes 18 times now in Zelda and I've lost count how many Mario titles there are.
