Hello all,

All this news about GT PSP is making me want to get it, but I don't have a PSP at the moment. I can get a used Original PSP for £65, a used PSP 3000 Slim & Lite for £110 or a new one for £130-50ish... Thing is, I only want it for GT, and possibly the Metal Gear games, but probably not. Is it worth spending the extra on a newer one, or will the older one do? I feel it might be worth pointing out that I have pretty big hands, is the S&L not very small to hold? The only other thing is what is the lifespan of the original PSP like? Does anyone still have one? Are there any issues to look out for, such as the UMD drive dying?

Cheers guys.

P.S. I'm reading the Gamespot live GamesCom Sony Press Briefing updates; preordering GT5 will get you GT Mobile for free, might as well take advantage of that offer, surely? In fact if that's the case I could spend more on the PSP itself...?

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the 1000. I'm not saying its bad, but the 2000 and (especially) the 3000 are superior in every way, and if you ever need to fix them the parts are interchangable (not always so with the Phats).
What are you getting the price quotes from?

What are you getting the price quotes from?

The used prices were from cex.co.uk (where I got my used 60gb PS3 from for £30 after trading a lot of DVD's, which still works) and the new from Amazon, though I can't find just the PSP 3000 S&L without games I don't want! Same goes for game.co.uk.

Good advice though, thank you.

I got a new slim and lite for £85 from Argos' ebay site a couple of weeks back, but they seem to have sold out now.

I was just asking because that seemed a little high. I don't know what Slim and Lites cost new in Europe, but I know that you could get a decent one in America for under $100 including shipping on eBay if you are lucky.

I believe the RRP of the slim and lite was between £99 and £129 depending on package.

If I can find the £99 one, I'm having it. If I can get a new one for £100 or less, that's what I'm going for. Thanks very much guys!

Just speculating but if you wait until the PSP Go comes out, you never know but the prices you're looking at now might drop?

Had a go at looking for new psp's. Have you looked on Ebuyer? They've got a S&L going for just under £120. Check the game website as well, at the moment they've got a -3000 going for the same price bundled with a game.

Edit: To answer your question about the lifespan of the original psp, that's the one I've got and mine's still working just fine.

New PSPGO's RRP will be £225 - yes only £25 less than a PS3...

If that was aimed at me then you obviously didn't read my post.. to make it simpler for you - when the new one comes out the older ones might get cheaper :dunce:

I bought an original (1000) PSP from a CEX store which is absalutely perfect.
I also own a PSP 2000, but always tend to use the 1000 - I just preffer it for gaming, especially with the longer battery life. I paid about £65 for the used 1000, which I think is a great bargain.

i was wondering what they were talking about and nothing is posted on the news page. is there any more info/ a link to go along with this. for example is it a digital or UMD copy. i'm guessing digital

Go for the 1000 or 2000.

You can run homebrew firmware on those which will allow you to do things like to rip UMD's to your memory stick, use custom XMB themes, and emulators that you can't do with Sony's firmware.

Well if you're only using it for GT PSP and maybe MGS then you may as well get the used 1000 model. No point in getting a brand new system just for 2 games. A friend of mine still has his original 1000 model and it still works great. I've never heard of the older model having any major issues. UMD drive failures don't seem to be very common. Go for the older model and save the money for the games. 👍

I think he meant the facepalm in regards to the fact that a portable console which is actually lacking features (in some respects, at least - smaller screen, no UMD drive, etc.) is only £25 less than a PS3, which, when you compare the feature list (let's just start with 1080p graphics and a Blu Ray drive...) is completely insane.

Given that I've searched pretty hard for a new PSP 3000 S&L for £99 and not found any, I'm highly tempted to go for a used 1000 thanks to many opinions offered here (thanks again, guys).

If I remember correctly from when I 'bought' my PS3, CEX give you a 1 year warranty, don't they?

And iwantdownload; I haven't seen anything further about the preordering GT5 deal, I presume GameSpot misunderstood the PSP Go offer or something. I'm not exactly that bothered if I have to pay for GT PSP, mind you.

I have a 1000 (or 1001 as it says on it) and it still works perfectly. I think its an American import as it came with a couple of games from there. But it doesn't matter for the games, it can play any region. Not films though. But I never use it for films.

It got a new lease of life when I got my PS3 and got the Ver5.51 software upgrade.

I'm similarly in the same boat. My boss has what he says to be an "original PSP", which I'm assuming to be the 1000. He said he'll sell it to me for $75 as he never uses it. I'm really just looking for a device which I can use to surf the web and **** around the house, and probably some casual gaming and modding etc. How is the PSP as a browser?

^ it svcks as a browser, really it does. Do not get it for that.

As for the original poster, if you do not want to spend a lot of money on games (GT and MGS only) get the 2000 model or a new 3000 model. I have had them all. And I can confirm that the 3000 model has the brigthest screen of them all.

I used to say the same thing about old fashoined Gameboys, GBA's, GBC, etc. every time I decided I wanted a portable for dead moments during work-pickups, they wouldn't come down below 80 bucks..even for an Anicent black and white gameboy?! i gave up on bothering with portables.

No it wasn't aimed at you. I just can't see why Sony think a £225 (stripped down in features)PSP could be succesful. Now if it was £150 or less, okay it would be successful...

I have two questions:
1) I have a PSP fat (must be the first one) and i heared that the slim and the new on has 64MB RAM in comparison with mine which has 32MB. Is there a difference in the gaming for example frame rate??

2) Gran turismo for the PSP will be compartible for all PSPs right? I mean there won't be different versions of the game?

Thank you in advance.

1: No, framerate is the same.

2: Yes, GTpsp is compatible with all current psp models. There are two versions of GT psp. UMD and psn version. Both play on all psp models.

Now go run to the shop!!! ;)
