Since I purchased a Dell a few weeks ago, my Macbook Pro has been pushed to the side. I've thought about installing some flavor of Linux on it, but I really don't know what I would do with it other than just play around. Does anyone have any interesting suggestions as to what I could possibly do with it so it doesn't just sit around?

You can store all of your media on the macbook and basically use it as a hard drive. I'm not too sure about how you will be to access the macbook over the lan. Another way is to make use of it on Winamp remote so even if you were out of town you could still access the music and videos you want. Other than that you could just sell it.

Paper weight? Sadly, with how fast the computer business evolves, computer electronics tend to be pushed aside unless you have very specific needs.

It could be anything... from hooking it up to a camera and turning it into a security/surveillance system to running scripts on Linux. Think about your computer needs and figure out what you could use it for.

What generation is the Macbook Pro? Specs? The resale value for Macs is surprisingly high, if you don't need it you could still get some good money out of it. Post it up on Macrumors.com's marketplace in the forum (must be a member for several months, 3 I think, and have 500 posts) or even eBay.

Original 2006 15" MBP. It's a 2.16ghz Core Duo, upgraded to 2gb of ram and upgraded to a 250gb hard drive, and it has a superdrive (aka dvd burner). Mac2sell says it's worth around $750, but that's probably a high estimate. I will probably end up selling it in a few months, but for now I'd like to entertain the idea of using it for something else, if there is even anything remotely cool to do with it.

If you really want to keep it,maybe turn it into a file server? Otherwise I dont really know what else you could do with it. Id just sell it.

Pr0n hub for sure

but seriously if you have Linux installed you could always give this a go. Plus with the relatively long battery life of a Mac it should work out good.

Unless he's only plugged it in once a week, I doubt a 2006 MBP would have much of a battery left to be honest... I just had to replace my late 2007's one because it suddenly died on me. ...and then the logic board went. And now the keyboard has a mind of its own. And the screen occasionally goes a bit loopy.

But other than that, it's uh... great.

Yeah, that is a problem. My MBP has been plugged in pretty much 24/7 since I got it, so the battery is fried. It lasts for maybe 5 minutes, and that's if I just let the computer idle.

That's mainly why I am looking for some alternative uses around the house before I go out and spend $75 on a new battery so I can try to sell it.

I use my dear old Toshiba Satellite R15-S829 as a media station/pr0n hub. Bigger screen, you see. It could do with a faster HD and more ram, but other than that, it works great.

Heh, pr0n hub, more ram, heh.

Oh, also, because I've got a new dual core 2 GHz processor, I use it for CPU intensive programs, like physics games. And pr0n.

Throw it into a wall. It'll be fun to do, and fun to look at!

Or give it to some poor kid, I don't know, whatever, booooooring.

Put some legs on it and have a pretty sweet macbook end table. Use it in the living room, bedroom, wherever you please. You could also put all important documents on it, stuff you don't access much. Maybe even put tunes on it and have it be a mac book pro stereo. Be pretty rad.

Disassemble the mac and hang it on the wall. It would be still usable if you take the casing off and it would be awesome as a decoration and a media server. Better yet you could just get rid of the monitor and keyboard. Then hook up a external monitor and keyboard.

Sell it. My dad sold his Powerbook to some guy in Arabia for more than he paid for it.
