Saw this topic on Slashdot, thought I'd see how you guys weighed in.

Do you take vacations? How often, for how long?

And the more interesting question I think is how much do you leave home? Does the cell phone, PDA, laptop/internet, etc come? How much do you "vacate"?
 
I used to go abroad yearly, haven't had chance to for a while but I still have been taking weeks away a couple of times a year. I don't tend to have much if anything to do with work when I'm away, if work phones and I did this last time when I was away in the lakes, I just divert the call to voicemail then when I get back say I left the phone at home. My best holliday to date was a 6 week tour of western Europe, I just took 2 months out of everything, and went in my little Seat Ibiza. I didn't come home with my little Seat Ibiza, but that's another story, the experience as a whole was just fantastic.
 
My vacation for the past two years came as a paycheck at the end of the year. Before that, we'd usually take off for a week and go camping. We'd take the phones, but have them turned off unless we were expecting a call from someone. Camping in Vermont is the usual getaway. However, this year looks like it'll be a winter trip, so we may skip off to some place warm and sunny for a week. Maybe a boat trip.

Not sure. Have to weigh the cash flow and the free time. With the zoo, its tough to get away for any real length of time.
 
I use to go 3 to 4 times a year. Not longer than 7 days each. I'm a skier, so I always go to Austria in the winter. My favourite time in Austria was when I was a member of an Austrian skiteam (I use to train their).
The only thing I took was my PS2 and some DVD's.
A couple of years ago I went to the US. I had a couple of female pen friends which I have visited.
 
We used to go to Thailand every other year to see my mom’s family, but that got too time-consuming; now we go to Mammoth for a few days every year to see my dad’s family.

We don’t do much, since my dad’s already been everywhere, and my mom doesn’t want to go anywhere. I’ll have to do more traveling on my own in the future.
 
You travellers are lucky. I've been to Canada a couple times, but that's not far away. Besides that I've never been out of the country. Usually my trips are to some sort of event, like a race or a car show, so it's not really a "vacation" in the usual sense. More like a road trip. But I can't forget the good times I've had in North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
 
I haven't been on a vacation in 10 years, and that was only to Florida (Mexico beach) for 2 days.

We tend to take a decent vacation about every 5 years. The rest of the time we just take a short trip here and there. Raising kids tends to use up both spare money and days off.

In 1997 we did 2 weeks in England - about 2-3 days at each end of the trip in London, the rest spent in a farmhouse in Malmsbury, from which we did day trips to Bath, Glastonbury, Sarum/Salisbury, Stonehenge, etc.

Then in 2003 or so we did a week in San Diego - Legoland, the Zoo, Seaworld, La Jolla, etc.

In 2005 we got lucky and got a half-paid trip to Disney World, so we spent a few days there.

We're thinking about going somewhere next year, but I'd like to spend some money on the house rather than a trip.
 
Over here in Belgium we have one big advantage over some other countries. If you have a full time job, we have 24 days paid vacation. And I m not even including the official holidays. Some jobs have more than 50 days of paid vacation.
 
My wife and I took vacations just about every year since we've been dating. Usually 7-10 days, sometimes to visit family, other times to go somewhere we'd never been before. We'd also take a few days off or a "long-weekend" to a resort or see the sights around the state, or maybe visit Disney World for a day or two.

The other "vacation" we take (since we've been homeowners) is to take a week off to clean up, repair, or organize the house...a little home improvement. Then we just enjoy living in our castle for a few days, instead of just treating it as a place to dump everything and sleep and wash yourself. Also, we might do something in the area we've never done before; it makes the place you live seem a little less hectic and stressful.

As for technology on vacation; we take our cellphones, but usually we leave them off, unless we're in a crowded area where we might get separated. I called my brother on his birthday last year while on vacation, but other than "we've landed/arrived/okay" calls to family, I won't use the phone. Other than that, a digital camera is about the only high-tech stuff we take. No laptops, PDAs (we don't have them anyhow), et cetera. I generally avoid computers when possible (although 4 years ago I made an exception to this rule when visiting my wife's family in Washington...in the cold of winter in a small town there wasn't much to do at night.)

In fact, I also go as far taking all non-essential keys off my key ring, take only two credit cards, ID, and medical/auto cards, and some cash. I don't want nagging reminders when I'm on vacation. I'll pack a non-car-related book and some pen and paper for drawing/writing, if time permits.

We go on a family holiday to Spain/France every year from two weeks, we also go on trips to Cornwall, Lake District etc.
 
I want to go on vacation, right now, tomorrow. I think I need a nice vacation.
 
I now get 30 days per annum paid leave. We usually take a 2 week holiday/vacation abroad over summer and then the odd week here and there when i'm quite at work so i can get some jobs done around the house. I'll also try to take a chunk off between Xmas and New Year.

We usually take a mobile phone with us but that's it - i want to be as incommunicardo as possible :sly:
 
I haven't been on an extended holiday for 10 years - since I went backpacking around Australia for 6 months when I was 20/21... I've never liked spending loads of money for a week or two week trip, when I could have something like a new Hi-Fi, guitar amp, keyboard etc. - all of which I still have to this day!

But when I do go away somewhere, it's usually either back home to Edinburgh, Scotland for a public holiday (like Xmas/New Year), and might spend a day or two at my sister's house in Glasgow, or I take long weekends and go over to Ireland for a spot of endurance drinking :sly: Luckily, my work allows for trips to meetings, conferences, training courses etc., and in the past 5 years, I've spent a week in Geneva, Chamonix, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, the French Alps (twice) and Aspen, Colorado - all so-called 'work' and all paid for by the good old British taxpayer :lol: Hopefully another trip to Germany is happening next year, and hopefully I can arrange for another conference either on the West Coast of the US, or Australia...
 
I'm back from my trip to Austria.
 
I haven't been on vacation in years. When we do we go to an old town named Clayton, New Mexico (oddly enough it's where my name came from) to see my dad's family. I've always wanted to go skiing or something, but we never go. Last time we went, I took my Cell Phone and my game boy (back when I had one :/ miss that little thing) But the cell never rings and game boy got boring so yeah.
 
When I was in high school, I took vacations every once and a while when I could. Summer, as for almost everyone, is the biggest time for me as I usually head to Europe. I usually take some food, maybe a game or two, and whatever to keep me busy on the plane. Afterwards, is just a big relaxing time.

I'll probably be spending Christmas home this year though, but in '07, I plan to head to Europe to celebrate it.
