Vauxhall has always been one of the most prominent names in the British Touring Car Championship, first entering the series in 1989 with a Cavalier. The lead driver was John Cleland, who raced with Vauxhall until his retirement in 1999.

The Cavalier was often the fastest FWD car on the track, with Cleland being 2nd in the title race in 1992 and winning the championship in 1995. The Cavalier was replaced by the Vectra in 1996, with Yvan Muller being 6th in the 1999 and 4th in the 2000 championship.

In 2001, the BTCC's regulations changed to greatly reduce costs and Vauxhall switched to the Astra Coupe. The Astra dominated the BTCC between 2001 and 2004, with Jason Plato (2001), James Thompson (2002 & 2004) and Yvan Muller (2003) all winning the championship in that car, with Vauxhall also winning the teams and manufacturers championships each year as well.

However, in 2005 Vauxhall made the switch to the Astra Sport Coupe and it was nowhere near as competitive, and restricted Vauxhall's BTCC success for 2005 and 2006.

In 2007 the regulations changed again and Vauxhall returned to the Vectra. This time driven by Fabrizio Giovanardi and Tom Chilton, they once again dominated the series, finishing 3rd in 2009.

However, due to the economic crisis and lack of official manufacture entries in the BTCC, Vauxhall pulled out of the BTCC and stopped supporting the teams, although Triple 8 Racing (who were the team fielding Vauxhall's since 1997) continued to use the Vectra until 2012.
