I work out of a branch office that runs multiple projects ranging from 2.5 million to $75 million dollar construction projects.

One of the biggest complaints we've had is the time it takes for important info to move from office to office.

I hit upon the idea of using a Vbulletin forum for office communication. One thing that has come up is possibly running multiple calendars for the projects. I looked at the Vbulletin homepage, but couldn't find a definiate answer. I'm almost certain of the answer, but have to ask the question anyways.

Does Vbulletin support multiple calendars?

Thanks

You should really be thinking about running an extranet server. There are plenty out there, my company uses a product called Projectwise, which is a Bentley product.

Basically, it's a secure version of Windows Explorer with knobs on, and it's very easy to set it up to be accessible across any number of offices. You can also broadcast its address on the internet, which would allow your architects, your engineers, your clients, and suppliers to access the data, along with the site personnel themselves.

It's hugely efficient because you can create workflows to move data around, and there's no need to post drawings either in print or in e-mail, as each person working on the project has a copy of the ProjectWise client, and they also have their own login to the system, which makes it secure, and enables information control (so you wouldn't have to make all of the information visible to the client!).

You can run multiple projects on the same box, each having their own data and login structures.

So basically, the tools exist to do what you want, and much better than trying to hack a piece of forums software to do it for you.

Hmmm...Vbulletin is $160 for a copy. How much is Projectwise?

What I hope to do with Vbulletin, is run a discussion gorup around each of the projects. So instead of GT3, GTC, and GT2 it would be Brookfielld High School, Travers Elementary and Thames Middle School.

We'd have a section for Construction Documents, Desgin, Marketing and others.

Not neccesarily to move data from one place to another, but more to facilitate discussion about upcoming milestone dates and delivery dates.

Expand this thought to a main office w/ branch offices (all drafting and production done at main office) and you've got an effective community that the enitre office can access from wherever they may be.

Of course, this is a thought, and I've still got to work out the kinkcs and how it would really apply to a firm.

The prevailing thought on my idea is that this would simple move the technolgy inept people to adapt easily to it. Real people's name (no @ symbols) just open up the software click on your project and type.

Thanks for the input, GG. Can you point me towards a website for projectwise?

Thanks

vBulletin 2 does not support multiple calendars, but this is a new feature coming in vBulletin 3.

Ah well, yes. You've got me there. ProjectWise is a long-term solution for data-sharing, although it does do what you want. It's more of an Electronic Document Management System, so perhaps it's maybe the proverbial sledgehammer to your nut.

It's about £80,000 for a 150-user system. You can see the web site if you click the link.
