How do you add good airbrushing to a vectored image? I have seen good work such as that by Mister-E and Donbenni for example where they have used airbrushing (or maybe gradients) to good effect.

Uh, airbrushing is raster, hence not used in vector unless for a background.
And well, if you wanna use gradients instead of learning how to create your own colors that flow, then you know who to talk to.
