I bought a 1982 Toyota Landcrusier Wagon yesterday afternoon. was a bargain for 6 grand. its got a 4.0 litre straight 6 deisel with 412 735 k's on the clock running on original motor. body has just been resprayed and there are no dings and no rust anywhere. the guy had kept the fisholine up to it and its in perfect nic.

i figure the engines tired and pretty much rooted so im gonna look around for a 351 windsor/clevo and put that between the rails. warm it over a little bit and drop an LSD in the rear. upgrade the tranny from a 4 speed to a 5...maybe overdrive included for 140kmh cruise control

will keep posted on progress.

nah...the landcruiser is 2.2 tonnes. id warm the 351 to maybe 350 - 370 hp and torque of about 320 - 350 ft lbs. just right to thump you back in your seat a fair bit

Guarantee though that'll you'll end up doing it one day:) So your going to turn it into a major off road tool then?

i think it will end up that way...the original layout will eventuate into more money lol. i want something that sounds good at high revs, has plenty of torque and also that will carve the piss out out of sand/mud.

Don't quote me on this but I think I heard somewhere that the Chev 350 is an easier conversion - have you got a motor lined up?

mr_pushrod - yeah its technical ozzi

vat_man - nah i havent got one yet, windsors are cheaper to work on than chevs but on the other hand chevs are easier to work on. windsors have a nicer thump at low revs and a sharper crack at high revs.

a 351 windsor should fit right in the rails without any mods.

yeah, they are more common than the 350's. id even buy an old falcon and use the motor...hang on...would you be interested in buying a falcon with a rooted 4.0 straight 6 vat man? :rotfl:

I think you've got that backwards: it's more like 250,000 miles. But no, it's not a camel. It's better. It's a Land Cruisers. Those things last forever (yes, better than Land Rovers). Just ask anyone in Africa, central Austrailia, Alaska....

yeah, its running all originals. it should have been rebuilt at 400 000 but wasnt...which is making me think.

if i get a 351, it will use a lot more fuel than the 4.0. the 4.0 straight 6 is more economical than the 3.8 commodore V6.

maybe if i stripped down the 4.0 and did a complete rebuild and added a decent turbo charger OR i could just try and find a late model turbo diesel and whack that in...any suggestions?

No, a kilometer is shorter than a mile.

And I read the May issue of "car" magazine where they say that the Cruiser is better than the Land Rover. Maybe in reliability, but not in go-anywhereness. ESPECIALLY the new Cruiser. It's a luxury SUV not an off-roader.

this one i have is 20 years old...its an original off road model. no poofy luxury crap in this. not even air con.

the new ones are crap, they are just for rich idiots that have a small wang.

lol at least it's true "rich idiots who have a small wang." I'm rather disappointed. Which is why I love Jeep; they've always been great. Rubicon. Rubicon. :D

UPDATE:

i have sourced a 4.2 turbo diesel from a patrol. first ill have to make sure that the block fits in the rails, then ill fiddle with it. if it dont fit...ill persuade it

bought 5 new wheels and tyres yesterday afternoon. all 31x10.5 R15LT tyres (31inches high, 10.5inches wide and the wheel size is 15 inches). $1475 for all five. will post some photos on the weekend.

ive also ordered a 9 inch limited slip diff for the rear which will arrive next wednesday. im thinkin of taking next week off work to work on the car. im thinking of a paint job...maybe gloss black or metallic red.
