So I've been making liveries for a while and I do really enjoy it - it really sucks time away.

I like to create things which are a bit oddball or unusual, and I seem to do a lot of transposing of liveries from other types of vehicles onto something appropriate - see the Ferrari below for example. I usually try to see if someone else has done it first... I like to be original. :D

#1. Here is Villeneuve's 1982 Ferrari F1 on the Gr.4 Italia. (2nd December.)

I'm learning all the time. I now try to ensure decals wrap properly and are not distorted - i.e. they are applied in the correct camera view and have the right depth settings.

Look up famous liveries and this one usually pops up close to the top. I've seen this since on the 911 RSR, and I might redo it myself...

#2. The 1980s Apple Computer livery from the Kremer Porsche 935, here on a 911 GT3 RS road car.

The stripes are all one decal. If you look closely you might see they have an outline. I use Inkscape 0.92.2 and the way it saves as standard, even if you set the outlines to 'not outlined' the outline still seems to turn up in GT Sport. I use SVGOMG now which seems to eliminate the issue, but I still set my outlines really thin and often match the fill colour to be sure.

You'll notice the BP logos on the car are modern. I sometimes mix up old and new if there's an old livery on a new car.

#3. Experiments with custom decal shapes...

So, I wanted to draw the 'lipstick' for the Aston Vantage. The best solution I found was to take a screenshot of the camera angle you're going to use to lay the decal on, then transpose this to Inkscape. Leave the PS4 idling with the camera angle set up as you want it... because it's easier that way. I share my screenshots to Facebook to get them onto the PC, but I'm sure there are many better ways.

Then I trace the decal I want onto the image, then I delete the image. Usually I save with and without. In this case I had to apply the decal twice, once on the front, once on the bonnet - being careful to match the camera angle each time. You do end up twaeking size and aspect a bit, but it usually turns up mostly ok.

The Aston wings on this original livery took a while to construct from the SVGs available. It mimics the badges you could buy on some special edition AMs.

#4. This wsa inspired by the original early 1980s Audi Sport livery for the Group B quattro A1. The colours aren't spot on, and some of the stripes are really hacked about, but if it looks ok in the end and there aren't too many decals, it's OK, right?

You can see I haven't learned to set the depths for the rear wing endplates yet...

#5. And then I sat and thought, if I was running a racecar, who would I ask for sponsorship? What products do I use?

I eat biscuits. Lots and lots of biscuits.

The McVitie's logo was converted from a CDR and it was bloody awfully constructed. It took me a couple of hours to sort out but it's worth it. The car now has a few more 'proper' decals on it now.

As for the car, I infinitely prefer the Scirocco to the Megane. It's almost as quick in a straightline, but I find the Megane just understeers everywhere. It has tracks it can do well on (I think it has odd gearbox ratios which definitely work some places and not others) but mostly I use the 'rocco. Also, I don't like modern Renaults much so I put a sucky paintjob on it and left it in the garage...

#6. One of my favourite liveries, from the BMW M1 Procar, here on the Group 3 Ferrari Italia.

What you can't see are the black Castrol/Bosch/Bilstein and blue Aral logos on the rear quarter. I loved doing this one - Inkscape has a spiral function so try it for yourself. Inkscape will create it as a stroke, so give it the right thickness, then convert the stroke to a path. I don't like using strokes, I think they have a scaling problem, so I convert everything into closed filled paths. The last stage is to make the centre and combine it with the new spiral path. Easy, huh?

Yeah, you'll figure out it's not so easy, but you'll have fun. This was again done with an image of the car in the camera angle I wanted so I could see where to cut the spirals so they didn't interfere across the body panels. The flanks, roof and bonnet were all done separately. And yes, I was lazy, the right flank is a mirror... it shouldn't be as all the sprials should be anti-clockwise from the centre. :)

Nice ones, like the Basf and the Ferrari the most I think. If you are looking for time consuming liveries, perhaps these two will keep you busy ;).

There are aftermarket decal sheets available to (perhaps) make it easier. Looking forward to you're next livery !

Whoa! That M1 looks relatively doable, but the Audi needs that next level of talent that I do't have. Some of the Japanese Anime character cars are incredible. Also, I've not found a method of successfully applying a gradient fade using Inkscape (it appears to be broken.)

We'll see. :D

#7. Speaking of BMWs... Alex Calder's BMW CSL Art Car tribute.

BMW have made lots of "Art Cars", but the 'Batmobile' by Alex Calder is geometrically simple enough to make a good go of as an exercise.

I used the Group 4 M4 as a base.

The colour panels are put on in just 7 decals. One each side, front, bonnet, rear and roof. The rest is matched in with simple shapes and the obvious proper decals such as the BMW roundels on the C-Pillars, the 'CA' signature, the electrical symbol and the 'TS' logos under the race numbers.

I've uploaded a Youtube video illustrating some of this (forgot the bonnet/roof!)

#8: An homage to the Group 4 Calberson Renault Alpine A310, in which Guy Frequelin won the 1977 French Rallye Championship.

I love this bold livery on a fantastic motorcar. I took some liberties and applied updated logos to the funky Renaultsport RS01 to show what it might look like if someone did the livery today.

The black bonnet decal is done by taking a screenshot and tracing the paths of the arches. It's not perfect in this case, I blame my losing the camera angle between screenshot and application. Still, close enough for government work. It is a one piece decal, I would probably have more success in making it in two halves (heh, could have mirrored it - d'oh!) or even four pieces - separating out the leading and trailing edges of the bonnet.

The RenaultSport 'R.S.' diamond logo is ripped right from their website - it's an SVG itself. It's the future, kids.

#9. Fittipaldi F7/F8 Formula One 1979/1980.

Emerson Fittipaldi ran a race team for a few years in F1, and the 'Skol' liveried cars from '79 and '80 always stuck in my mind. Usually they ran a strong yellow, you can see them in a pale yellow, but I've seen photos (that I cannot find on the internet) of the cars in a straw gold which I always liked.

Skol is Brazil's beer. Simple as. There's a video going around with a VW Beetle and a skull stuck over the carb inlet - wired to open its jaw with the throttle. It's funny, find it out, but you can tell it's a Brazilian Beetle, because there on the left, there's a Skol tinny as a catch can. :D

So, I set off to make an updated Skol livery for the EF7. This is an object lesson is what isn't particularly successful...

The new Skol logo and colours aren't great. I found the right font and did the 20 in the same font as the S, K & L of the logo, but it falls over a bit. Also, gold? Not the most handsome colour now - what was I thinking?

Skol do a couple of alternate drinks with mulitcolour blue logos - I may try again and make something a bit more striking...

👍👍👍👍 , Love the art cars, very nice work, will have to look you up ingame and rip whatever I can :D

whilst looking up some decent decal pics of the croc r8, found this one, will have to pre order this slot car, epic livery :D

The trickiest part of the Calberson liveries is the thin red line up on the bottom and the arches. Fortunately, it is not on all cars (like the first pic you put).

Some companys are providing their logo on vector files for everyone, like Total.

Anyway, great work on your liveries ! And @Koutch_Pro challenges seem tough...

#10. MAXI!

Have a look here.

This one was again a trace, to get the shapes of the red wheelarch areas. It was done as front & rear parts of the side, then the bumpers wrapped onto them.

Modernised logos were used, along with a custom Phillips 'autoradio' script, and the white box placement was adjusted to suit the Megane and GTS' number placement.

The R5 is a car I'd love to see back in GTS, along with the Stratos. *sigh*

Finally, I put my driver and co-driver callouts on the side, with the appropriate country flags. :D
