VERITAS Update Manager?

What, exactly, is this?

Whenever I boot up the computer, it goes to the desktop and I get this:

untitled29zg.gif

I have to keep clicking cancel in excess of twenty times until it goes away. I personally have no idea what this problem is, so any help on the matter would be terrific.

Also, see all those icons below "Untitled-1" and the three in the second column? I can't remove those. I can't drag and drop to the recycle bin or right-click at all on any of them. It's like they're stuck on the desktop. Any help on this would also be great.

Thanks.

Start > Run > msconfig. Click on the Startup tab and remove anything related to VERITAS there. Also check Start > Programs > Startup for anything.

As for those desktop icons, there's probably a way easier way than this, but I can't be arsed thinking and this was the first thing that came to mind:
  • Ctrl + Alt + Del and kill the explorer.exe process.
  • With the Task Manager still open, click the Applications tab, click on the New Task button and type in "cmd" without the quotes.
  • Type the following in the command prompt:
    CD "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\"
  • Now type the following:
    DEL "Card Games"
  • Then:
    DEL "Poker"
  • And finally:
    DEL "Travel"
  • Go back to the Task Manager and click New Task again. Type in explorer.exe.

Okay, I deleted the VERITAS out of Startup. Reboot on the way.

DEL "Card Games" and the rest of it didn't work though, so if anyone could help me out on that, it'd be great.

Those icons are for things that have been installed as part of some dodgy software that you have - i.e. Kazaa ir some other P2P program. You need to follow your standard malware-eliminating procedures.

I don't think that is the reason, Giles - those icons get installed with Messenger Plus, and even if I take it off they're still there.

But I'll do a quick scan later. Thanks.

Messenger Plus comes with optional spyware (that makes me laugh each time). You can choose not to install any of that junk if you pay attention to the installer and not just click "Yes" to everything. :)

Uninstall Plus > Run Ad-Aware (or whatever it is you use) > Install Plus and don't install the spyware.
