Has anybody found any proof that standing your PS3 vertically helps with heat dissipation? Logically it makes sense. Im just curious and wondering if standing my ps3 vertically would increase its lifespan...

Also, Has anybody invested in one of those tri cool vertical stands?

Looks like it would work pretty well. Im trying to keep my PS3 in a well ventillated spot but a little extra assurance would be nice.

Thanks

I've had my ps3 since launch in a stereo case and mine has never overheated. Also on many forums i visit, people have said that coolers are known to kill xbox 360's. I'm not sure i'd risk a 600$ ps3 on it.

thanks!! Yeah, I've had mine for about almost a month now and have been taking pretty good care of it. on a different subject though, The only thing that worries me is moving it! My 47" HDTV is downstairs, and My fast internet connection is upstairs (Im poaching my neighbors). So i move it up and down every once and a while to download demos and games etc... Should I be worried?

thanks

Both my PS2's stand vertically and don't have any problems, if anything they sound abit more unhappy horizontally. They were designed to be vertical.

As for the PS3... I would have it vertical for aesthetics because it looks the business vertical, just like the ps2 did with the official purple/blue stand, but for actual functionality I would have it horizontally just to stop dust getting in.

I'm sure heat can get away better in the vertical position because heat rises and it would just escape through the grille at the top... on its side it has to collect in the machine before gradually seeping out of the sides.

As for those stands I think they are a waste you don't need cheap nasty fans cooling it.. if you get a stand it should be thin and attractive, like the slimline ps2's one... I wish they did an oval just like that for PS3.

Also this thread would be good if it was a poll...

I haven't.

I have mostly had my PS3 in horizontal position on an equipment rack. Not only has it never shown any signs of over heating, but I have left it on for over 200 hours straight running F@H (which currently is the only program for the PS3 that comes close to maximizing the processor's power... thus creating the most heat), and has not once shown even a hint of overheating.

In fact, I left it on running F@H for over a week while I was on vacation. When I came home the PS3 was still only at room temperature... except for the area around the vents of course, but amazingly, after just 5 minutes of being turned off, even they cooled down to room temperature. Of course the only area that is at risk to excessive heat is the motherboard, and in this, the PS3 does an absolutely remarkable job.

The case and heat sink design of the PS3 is brilliantly designed, and unless there was a manufacturing error for your specific unit, you should not at all be concerned about the position of your PS3.

Yes I agree, the PS3's heatsink and internal design is a feat of engineering, really something special which I think they put alot of work into seeing as they knew this things was gonna run hot and it would be on in peoples homes almost all of the time... no expense spared copper heatpipes and all..... oh and plus a ton of aluminium fins everywhere!

I should matter which country you live in, what temperature, whether its in a cabinet or whether its on for weeks, it will survive!

Just a quick reminder pic of the beast which is.....

Voted in the Poll 👍 Thanks for adding it Cheef :)

I keep mine vertical as I'm a heavy smoker and the smoke shouldn't get on the "eye" as bad. No facts on this just my opinion. I also have a ceiling fan and a room air filter running 24/7. The other reason is that I have a surround sound system,2 DVD recorders, cable box,HD input selector box,and a 55" HD widescreen rear projection TV. It seems like 1/4 mile of wires and cables going from one to another, so I find it easier with less heat buildup to have it vertical beside the sound system.

I had mine vertical before I got the new TV (was in a cabinet as well, but I opened it when I was playing), but now it won't fit under the TV unless I pull it out too far, so its horizontal. I liked the vertical look better, but now I've grown to liking it horizontal.

Apart from the heat maybe escaping easier, it should also cool a little better having air flowing on the bottom of it as well, but it probably isn't much of a difference. I'm considering doing something to have my 360 vertical or at least have some air flowing beneath it so it doesn't overheat for now. It shut off at 2:30 last night playing Forza 2, luckily I was just taking pictures so nothing was lost or corrupted. It lasted about 7 hours straight on it, so its alright for now.
