I've recently purchased a game that is too much for my GeForce4 card, namely Battlefield 2. In my price range, I've looked at the GeForce 6600 series and have it narrowed down to two basic cards:

1. 6600 w/ 256MB , core clock: 300MHz , memory clock 500MHz about $140

2. 6600 GT 128MB , core clock: 500MHz , memory clock 1000MHz about$160

#1 has more ram, but #2 has more speed. Perhaps it depends on the game, but I'm leaning towards #2. I'd take the best of both worlds, but that card costs about $240.

Does anybody have a strong opinion for one or the other?

Thanks for any help

You'll want the 6600GT.

The GT is doing 16GB per second in memory bandwidth, while the non-GT does 11GB. With almost double the memory clock speed, the GT (1000MHz DDR) nullifies the extra memory on the non-GT (700MHz DDR). Plus, the GT has a higher GPU clock speed (500MHz), which is just not obtainable on the non-GT (300MHz).

For Battlefield 2 I would recommend the best video card you can afford, and at the very least 1 gig of ram. BF2 is a memory monster...

Go with the 6600GT. It has a 256 bit memory interface which speeds up memory access therefore producing less "skippage" in the game. And the GT has much faster performance clocks which will make the graphically intensive run smoother and better.

That and you'll only really need 128mbs of RAM on a video card because nothing really comes close to using that up now, and shouldn't for the next good while.

Thanks for the advice. That makes perfect sense, I just wasn't sure. Since the speed is what seems to make the biggest difference, do you think that the next step up, the 6600 GT w/ 256MB would be worth it? The 128MB one I can get from newegg for @ $160. The 256MB goes for @ $240. Would my gaming experience really be $80 better?

There won't be any noticable difference for a good long time until they make games that are extremely graphically intensive, I'm talking like 5 to 10 times as intensive as most games today.

I know, My GeForce4 Ti ... works on everything else I have now. It runs CounterStrike: Source perfectly smooth. Its just BF2, which I've heard is currently the mother of all games, when it comes to performance demands. I'm gonna go with the 6600 GT, I just don't want to spend over $215 to play BF2 (cost of game and card).

Remember the more ram on a GPU the more complex textures it can use.

But its not simply about complexity of textures, pixel shading is also an issue...

This is the main reason for the 6600GTs superiority over the 5*** series
