well right now ive decided i need a new video card. the one i have is pretty decent but it lags on doom 3 on the lowest setting. i dont want to spend a lot, preferably under 200. i just need one just strong enough to where doom 3 wont lag on the lowest setting. i dont care if it can handle the highest setting or not.

Ever look at the 6600GT? Even the PCI-E versions are under $200.

Yes, that's the best out for that price range.

I just got an X700 pro agp, it juist came out recently but the PCI-E has been out for a while. Its slower than the 6600 GT but where i live they are all over $249.99. The X700 was $200. But the ATI 9600 XT is under $170. The X700 is good enough for me.

Note: I play on a 27 and 32 inch TV so i dont need to run high resolutions. So im getting about 60fps(max set to 60) average on Doom 3 highest settings. and its far more entertaining playing on a bigger screen. I was getting 20ish on medium on my FX 5200 :) so 60 on ultra is a major boost.

I've got a FX5200 on my Dad's desktop PC. I agree it's quite usless at Doom 3. :grumpy:

My best Laptop has a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo which is pretty good.

Update: I'm very pleased with the X700 pro AGP. it was $50 less than the 6600 GT agp, i guess I got what I paid for. A $200 card with better or equal to the 9800 pro performance. Overclocked to 455/465. Great card for ATI fans and it destroys the FX 5200 i had.

I'd rate it an 8/10

My FX5200 works perfectly fine. :odd: On Doom 3.

The GeForce 5 (FX 5200 through 5950) series of cards suck at DirectX 9 applications. The ATI equivalent and even lesser cards can sweep these Nvidia cards on any DirectX 9 application. The GeForce 6 cards (6200 through 6800) have no problem and most likely will beat the ATI equivalent.

Again, my FX52000 has minimal lag the only time it lags is when doors slide open and it's very minimal lag at that. Less then a second.

Anything less than Max or High settings at relatively high resolutions (higher than 1280x960) on Doom 3 looks like crap. A 5200 will not cut it and most likely not run it at all.

I like a smooth frame rate. You like playing it 15-20fps which I don't like. Thats why I don't like the FX5200.

My ATI 9600 Pro isn't fast enough for me sometimes. That's my personal opinion.

I would have to beg to differ. I have a Gainward 5900 Ultra and the thing rocks. Beautiful graphics, great performance, all you could ask out of a (at the time) $600. graphics card.

Only game that gives me frame rate trouble on max settings w/ AA is NFSU2, for some reason the overbright and extra contrast eat up frames.

I just got a new TV, its another 27in but 800x6000 is very viewable and readable(netscape) Doom 3 looks fantastic. Now only if the componet out put on the X700 didnt suck big time. I no longer need a computer monitor since I can see and read eveything at 800x600.

I could play Doom3 and Half-life 2 on the old 5200. st need to get past the long load times.

I wish my TV had S-Video. Then I could play Doom 3 on my TV. But the only TV with it is downstairs. I still say the FX5200 works perfectly fine. If you are a hardcore gamer yeah you want better but I'm playing for fun.

Trust me... the weakest you want to go when getting a video card right now is a 9800 Pro. I'd honestly reccomend dropping at least $200 on something faster than the 9800Pro unless you plan on upgrading yet again in six months to run the latest games at over 16fps. My 9600XT 256mb is just about obsolete already.

the 5200 is just weak... 👎

I'm perfectly satisfied with it. Plus I have PCI. That car is about as good as it gets for PCI.

Integra Type R
Under $200? I'd probably go with a 6600GT. Only $135.

Retail outlets dont sell it that cheap. add another $114.99

The only thing that kept doom playable on the 5200 for me was my 3ghz P4.

Why not shop online? Ever tried Newegg?

I have no patients for shipping unless i have no choice. I passed on a 32in TV that was $20 dollars more just so i wouldnt have to wait for shipping. So i got the 27in version and it seems better for me anyway. And that barely fit in my car.

Well if you don't find anything I guess www.newegg.com can be your last resort. But it would be my first choice, that's where I got my FX5200.

With that I'm off to school. Bye and nice TV. 👍 (and car :p )

i once ordered something from newegg on a monday and it was at my door by wendsday. And i live all the way in NJ.

I live in Tuscaloosa Alabama, and Newegg is never more than 2 days away. You can't beat that.

On topic:
Before considering which video card to upgrade to, with the new technology out today, an older system will be all but obsolete within a year or so. I have an nforce2 based system and I might get another year or so before upgrades will be futile. Also if you put a ATI 9*** series or a GF FX series in a sub-2 gigahertz system you are wasting your time. Post your system specs and we'll see what's best for you.

you might even want to go to PCI-E. But that means new mobo. For Racing games CPU power is really important also. And fast ram helps. The nex ttime I upgrade i'm gonna try to go for one of those athlon 3xxx or 4xxx CPU's.

The new Intel processors for the PCI-E mobos are much cheaper than the Athlon 64's. I've used AMD's in all the systems I've had. I currently have a xp2400. The next upgrade I believe will have to be a whole system for me. You figure: PCI-E mobo, processor, graphic PCIx16, new faster DDR2 ram, and all that's left if sound, harddrives, optical drives. The cost of the individual components for this upgrade would be more than a good Alienware or Dell system if you go for the best.

i bvought an nvidia gforce 6800 from a local store in central FL, was less than 150 and Half life 2 flies on it. doom 3 demo could handle highest of all settings minues some of the antialising.

everquest 2 runs well on it also, highest resolution possible with medium graphics, but u know i also have an amd64 3100 or wtv that was i bought and then also high 1024ddr ram.

well here's my system

AMD 2800
2.1gig
120HD
512ram

i want to get a 1g stick of ram but theyre so expensive ill probably just get another 512. and ill give it a few months and ill probably upgrade my mother board and processor to something that will get me at least over 3.5g maybe more depending on the prices i find.
