I need to find a really good video card at a reasonable price ($200- or less) I want to play some games like Star Wars KOTOR and hopefully The Sims 2. help would be appreciated. I am not to smart at looking for internal computer parts.

heres my current card. It wont play ANYTHING! I couldn't play Deus Ex Invisible War on it.

You can't go wrong with an ATI 9600XT. I bought mine on sale for around $175(regularly $220 when I bought it) over a year ago. I'm sure you can find a 9600XT for around that price nowadays.

Definately. They're the best value for money card around this way too. Almosr $200, and with the exchange rate, that's even cheaper here. If I didn't have to get a PCI Slot Card, I would get one of those.

Do you have an AGP port on your motherboard?

I have a 9600XT, it's quite nice. I think it'd do you well. Of course, I can't recommend anything not knowing whether or not you have an AGP slot. However, based on the assumption that you do, 9600XT will do you well.

Or if you have a little more, 9800 Pro.

YAY!!!

Please consider this. 👍

"PCI-Express" 👎

The X700 series isn't going to be made in an AGP version, either. Mainly because there is alread the 9000 Series, and with the 9800 Pro reaching speeds not too aweful far behind, I understand their reasoning.

You should have a look at the AGP flavor 6600GT, though.

I have never taken the case off the computer since I only got it in August. It is a compaq Presario.

Hmm.

Hearing that makes me immediatly assume it doesn't have an AGP-slot. However, maybe it does, keep your fingers crossed. What is the model number?

Most Compaqs I've come across use AGP...

The only PC that are mainly PCI-only that I know of are HP computers.

HP and Compaq are one in the same, pretty much.

Compaqs are generally not as nice.

You can usually tell by what kind of video they come with. If you get a compaq with a GF4 440, for example, it'll obviously have an AGP slot, but if it has onboard and is a pre-built, in my exprience anyways, they don't have AGPs. Of course, the somewhat-rare exception is always there. 👍

Get a 9800Pro. They're far better than 9600XT.

Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro Atlantis. Look it up, it's a gem.

I don't know it off hand, and I'm at work right now, so I can't check.

Sort of. HP own a part of Compaq, or something like that. Eh, I don't pay much attention to my Dad sometimes. But the Compaq PCs can differ quite a lot from HP PCs.

Also, almost all pre-builts mean you will need a PCI Card. I haven't seen any exceptions myself, but there would be some out there.

In My experience, Compaqs are WAY better than HPs. Infact Compaqs are the only ones I will buy. because They are more to my tastes.

Don't buy anything in the 9600 range. They were cards made for the mainstream, not so much for gamers. I had a 9600pro and I hated every moment of it. My 9500 pulled higher frame rates than the 96. Best bet is to find a cheap gforce 6600 or my favourite - the 9800 pro.

I hate both Compaq and HP. Hp just plain sucks and my Compaq laptop is falling apart.

9800 Pro. Or newer 800 XT.

My personal favourite - Go a high-end GeForce. I'm a GeForce man and ain't no one gonna persuade me otherwise. :D

Well, if he got the computer in August I highly doubt that it doesn't have an AGP slot. I don't even think they still made PCI card that can run any modern game. Why would Intel put in old technology into their motherboards to give to Compaq?

That isn't around $200 and his motherboard doesn't have PCI-Express.

I think Stinky was referring to the 9800 XT. Also, there are X800 XT's that are AGP slot cards. So.... I don't know why you posted this.

Don't invest in anything over the top - it will be bottlenecked by the rest of your system.

Try and buy something that complements the rest of your computer, not out paces it.

I didn't know it was possible to buy a PC these days that didn't have an AGP slot on the motherboard. Unless it's straight out of the bargain bin of your local PC megastore.

KM.

A 6600 GeForce is a good idea, but will be useless without good enough memory and CPU.

I realised that about an hour after I posted this.

Mid-range cards do the same thing at a lot less cost. Go a 9600 as described above.

Good choice. And good for you for not getting a crappy 9600 👍

"crappy"?

A mate of mine runs a 9200 and that works fine for most games on a reasonable setting.

[edit:] LOVE the Supra, mate! Is there a full size pic? Different angles?
