I'm trying to watch some AVIs that have the resolution of about 540x240 and I am noticing severe slowdown. It happens in winAMP and Windows media Player. I don't see this problem with MPEGs yet... I would think that my comp could handle these movie. I have an athlon X2600+, Radeon 9800pro (I think there might be something wrong with this, it has never really lived up to its potential, my bros 9700 mobile can beat it in benchmarks) and 512MB RAM. I'm thinking it might be the RAM.

Are there any settings I can change to make sure that it performs better?

Try a program called RAM Idle, it will tell you how much RAM you have left and can free up RAM if it gets too low. Do a search on google, I don't remember exactly where I found the program.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete,
->Task Manager

How many task are running? You can also check memory usage there.

What Catalyst version are you using?

What DirectX version are you running?

What MFG of the 9800Pro are you using (Saphire, Connect3D, Asus, ATI, ect...)?

Wow, your computer setup sounds a lot like mine. I also am using a amd xp 2600+ with 512mb pc3200 ram. I just bought another 512mb and it should be here by tomorrow morning, i'll tell ya how fast it really makes it, see if it's worth it. Do you use pc2700 or 3200?

Ok then, about the video problems, that may be due to the player. Have you downloaded a newer version of that? I did have this problem a few times, even when I closed the player without stopping the video first, it'd still play in the background, and I'd hear it until it was finished. I upgraded my media player and it worked fine after that. Also the service pack 2 didn't hurt either.

I use a FX 5200, that's worse than the 9800, and I havn't really gotten any severe slowing problems yet, I don't know what would be your real problem, other than software or memory issues. That's what sucks about computers sometimes, could be a number of things causing the same symptoms.

Pako- DX9c (whatever the newest is)
Catalyst 4.9 betas (The specialized Doom III drivers that came out right after Doom II was released, im not sure of the name)
Sapphire 9800 pro

Javaw.exe is using up the most of my resources of any program... If I terminate it, the video does play a lot better. The program does come back after a bit, though.

OmicroN- I am still using Windows Media Player 9 and WinAMP 5.01 and I use PC3200

Looks like the last official Catalyst version that is non beta is 4.12.

You might want to consider a non-beta driver.

WMP9 should be find, but WMP10 might be better. There's really no reason why your computer can't handle those files. Another area that you may want to trouble shoot is the Audio. Audio conflicts can also effect video playback.

With the Task manager open, try watch the system resource meter to see where it hits when the video studders.

Here's an example of some uncompressed 720x480 AVI file playing.

I noticed that whenever I end javaw.exe, Azerus(Bittorrent) closes, too. does Azerus require javaw.exe or something?

sorry for my typos and lack of capitalization, I am very tired right now and couldn't be bothered fixing them. I'm gonna sleep now.

Something interesting....

Here's another click, same resolution, but check out the CPU usage in this shot:

Do you have other AVI files that you can check? Perhaps it wasn't encoded very well, or in a compatible format for WMP playback.

There are really a lot of variables, but you'll find it...

Go get some sleep. ;)

I forgot all about that - you linked me to RAM Idle one early morning net session around 4am. I think I bookmarked it, hang on... Nope. It's in one of the conversation threads somewhere, so having a faster connection than me (yep, I'm willing to say that even though I have no idea what connection you're on) you could go search for it. 👍

Yes, Azureus is made in Java, so it needs that to run.

I use BitTornado. When I tried Azureus, I noticed that my download speeds were down. And I'm on 56k...

Tornado is nice and simple.

Oh, cool. 400mhz 3200, good thing to use. The 2nd 512mb I bought made this computer really really quick, now things load with lightning speed, and I can play my games and watch videos faster.

You should upgrade your media player, you never know if it'll hurt or not. Well, hope things run faster for you.

btw, if you want, I can get you the site to where I got my samsung memory, $70 seemed pretty good. Free delivery, got here pretty quick too.
