I'm curious -- do any of you guys race as a hobby or profession?

I've done SCCA autocrosses & track days for 3 years now. I have been racing a daily driven 1988 Honda Prelude in STS, but I'll be building an SM 87 RX7 TII. It'll be my trackwhore 👍

So what about you guys? Ever get out of the virtual seat and into the real seat?

I've done a couple of rally courses and am currently doing a university course in Product Design with Motorsport in Scotland, which will allow me to work in motor-racing as an engineer. :)
 
RAvell I'm interested, can u tell us abit more of how you can break through in motor-racing or even the auto industry as an engineer, I am currently finishing up mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic of Montreal Canada, but there is nothing here for the auto industry, only the F1 track Gilles Villeneuve (which i have raced on :) ) So I want to head over to Europe and do a masters in automotive engineering in England. Do you recon this would be effective?
 
I run 15 or so autocrosses a year, including SCCA National Tour and ProSolo events. I've been autocrossing for about 12 years. :)
 
I too run a full season of autocrossing each year. Have been since 1999. Average two or three track days a year. Wheel-to-wheel racing is just out of my grasp for now... it gets expensive real fast! If I ever find the car I'm looking for I'll have a go at a National Tour and ProSolo in '05, possibly Nats if I can get the time/money together.

Autocrossing for the last 6 years. the last 5 have been in a 2000 Civic Si that just won STS in San Antonio.

Had a few runs in it at Texas World Speedway (WEEEE!!!).

Novice Chief for San Antonio's autocross club.
 
Several SCCA Autocrosses.
Raced Texas World Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway before.

And I've been in the Monaco GP. (Not the F1 race)
 
I used to have a domestic A license in Japan for a few years but never got into full competitive racing (mostly did timed events, media events, and lots of kart racing).

I've been lucky enough to race on Motegi (full east/west course, north course, and the speedway), Tsukuba, and Fuji Speedway (the year before they closed for renewal).
 
I went on an S2000 club run this past spring in Ohio on one of the most twisting roads in America, called SR26. There was 21 of us, (19) S2000's and one modified Civic hatchback, and me with the modified EvoVIII. It sounded like an F1 race with 8,500 -9,000 RPM engines through the trees :p The road follows a river and goes through the Appalachians' so it varies in height quite often. I have also gone to the track and run some 1/4 miles with the Evo.
 
I've been taking my cars to the dragstrip since I was 16 (almost 20 now) and love it, but it's not exactly the Focus's strongpoint. I'm gonna start autocrossing this year, I tried to hold out and run HS so I'd be more competitive once I got some seat time in, but the mod bug wouldn't leave me alone so off to STS I go bc of a new rear sway bar. I'm actually waitin on my tax return now so I can get some good springs/dampers to match.

I've ridden around Laguna Seca but haven't driven it in my own car... the walls scare me. :) Buttonwillow and Thunderhill have only the pit-straight wall to worry about, so if you overdo it in one turn you just kick up some dirt. :) Much more confidence inspiring.

Laguna is also very expensive to rent... trackdays there are usually near double what they are elsewhere.
 
is auto-crossing where they take cars like hondas, nissans(daily drivers) and they build them for racing and race them on tracks?

If so how do i get into doing this because it seems like fun and something i would do when i get older?

I only do it virtual and with my car on the street. Pedal to the metal and look around for cops offcourse :)
This is the exact opposite of what he's talking about. Nobody cares about street racing - it's stupid and dangerous.

Autocrossing is solo racing on a course laid out in cones on a big, flat area like a parking lot or unused airport. Cars run one at a time against the clock, with a penalty for each cone hit. Cars are classed by amount of modification (from stock to highly built) and grouped by competition potential. Raw times are compared, and also by PAX score which is a formula that theoretically factors out the classes, so that it's possible for a better driver in a lower class to win the overall day.

I've done a little autocrossing and a track day at Blackhawk Farms during a Neon get-together. I will probaby get into autocrossing in a more serious way once the kids are a little older and I'm less busy.

User ///M-Spec lives in Florida and does a lot of autocrossing as well.
 
I know what rally cross is, a went to those races a lot. A friend of my has a Ford Escort MK II and raced it till he chrashed hard and now he's stopped offcourse
 
Thats the reason why I have a Land Rover now. It only goes 170 kmh and isn't really a think for street racing. But now I offroad more, actually more fun :)

Rallycross is cool, but nobody does it much here on the East Coast of the US.
 
Three years of Solo II, first in D Stock in a Sentra Spec V, and now in a '95 Miata that is being fully-prepped for E Stock this season. I plan to make it out to the Toledo National Tour event, even though I know I'm going to get spanked. :lol: I am the Solo chair for my region this year.

Unfortunately, GT4 doesn't have much that really simulates a Solo II course. The gymkhana courses are much tighter and slower than what we normally see. Most are done in second gear, and sometimes third. (for the average street car). The one license test though, (I think it is 7 & 8 in the ib tests, both in the Z4, one with stability control, one without) is a very good simulation of a slalom at typical Solo II speeds. Though I have only seen a 10 cone slalom once at any of our events.

Nice Miata pic....here is one of me in our ES Miata, although ours is an underdog '90 model. It belong's to a friend who is lettting me co-drive it.

I have been autocrossing religiously since 2001, started in my Miata in stock, moved it to CSP, then SM2 and realized I wanted a competitve ride. Bought an 89 Civic for STS and drove it very underprepared to a 19th at nationals in 03 and after doing a lot of work to it this last year, I finished 4th at nationals in STS. Could of won it, but I had a slight error by dragging the brake too much until I lost all vacuum and couldn't stop for the last tight corner....oh well. Sold the Civic now and will be running AS in an S2000 next year.
