Hi Guys,

Finally posting after lurking for a couple of years, soaking up excellent knowledge all round. Now I'm in need of some specific advice, and feel this is an ideal place to ask.

I'm going to be visiting my brother in Japan between 18th feb and 18th march, and would like to know if anyone can recommend essential places, shows, racedays etc for a car-nut to visit during my stay?

I will primarily be based in Nagoya, but plan to visit Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka and Kobe for a day or two each. Maybe a flying visit to Yokohama too.

So far I'm planning to attend:

-Nagoya Autotrend: http://www.n-autotrend.com/

-Toyota museum/city in nagoya

-Suzuka if it's re-open (it'll be very close) and maybe Fuji Speedway too. Does anyone know if they do tours etc?

-maybe try to meet some Rokko mountain drifters in Kobe my bro knew when he lived there a while back, which would be would be great.

It's a shame I'll just miss the Exciting Car Showdown 2009, and I think Okayama might be too out of the way to go see Super GT official testing.

Any help would be great as my bro isn't really a huge car guy, but if I can figure out the where and when, he can help me with the how.

As you can tell, I'm really looking forward to this, and would appreciate any help. Hopefully I can come back with some juicy pics/vids for you all to enjoy!

Thanks!

Try to pop into a Super Autobacs car superstore. It's quite amazing to see how you can shop for car parts in the same way you would for food/DIY materials/tools!

Often interesting cars in the car parks too (Nismo R-Tune was the highlight of my visit there)

Maybe try some of the local autohouses too? Look on websites for addresses and other details.

Also try to stand on a platform as a highspeed train passes, it's incredible.

If you are visiting your brother then I think he would be batter to ask what to do over there.

I agree with the Super Autobacs store, fantastic place, I wish I could fit all those parts in my suitcase!

but my recomendation is just take it all in, I went for a bus ride through the mountains, such lovely roads and took a train back (very crowded and not so fun). Next time I go I will take the bullet train, I never even went on the platform last time :(

Oh and also as mentioned look at cars in car parks, lots of cool, odd and interesting cars to be found.

When in Tokyo, head over to Odaiba and check out the Toyota showroom. You can see some sweet rides (street and race) as well as hop on the Gran turismo simulators if they are still up. In that same shopping complex are a few famous automobiles so be sure to look around.

Last time I was there someone was shearing a sheep as well.

Although it may not be JDM-tyte, I'd head on down to Akihabara for sure. Crazy Japanese tech, videogames, manga, and all that jazz FTW!

Sweet Bajesus! Shearing sheep?! good lord! i need to get a plane ticket there NOW!

Wish i could suggest something original. Just tell your brother that your looking for a good time in japan and a motor head provided he doesn't know that already. if he does and hasn't planned anything just ask him if he'll take you somewhere.

If I was going to Japan, I would definitely not miss the Gyokuryuki... the giant national high school kendo tournament. I think it takes place in July, though. :( If you or your friend like martial arts or samurai stuff then this would be a neat experience.

The 2007 finals are on youtube. Some of the fastest kendo you'll ever see... these kids are amazing.

Well, it depends on what prefecture you're going to. There's always good places to go in Japan (obvious one is Fuji). And if you tell me which prefecture I could give you some better ideas about where to go. My girlfriend is from Japan, so if I don't know she will. :)

Overnight NOS bottles!

amatuers don't use nos...you should see the way I drive, I've got a heavy foot ;)

Cheers for all the pointers guys (car and otherwise) can't believe I didn't even think of the Daikoku futo or super autobacs (where else am I going to get just a roller skate grand touring all over the physical ironic? ;))
I know garage defend are in nagoya, so that's another port of call, was hoping there might be a few more shows on that I didn't know about! :(

Luckily my bro is pretty clued up on Japanese culture (been there on and off for the past 10 years), so sorted on the touristy type stuff and more, he just knows next to nothing about the car culture (nor is bothered). I was litterally shocked when I told him about the Odaiba Toyota history museum and he'd planned to take me there already! maybe I underestimated him..

Omnis: I would absolutly LOVE to see the Gyokuryuki, both my brother and I are Kendoka!

Once again cheers guys!!
