I spent some time on Friday afternoon reading up in the Drift forums about drift settings and such and decided to give this a try. So I went home Friday night and switched on the PS2... Here's what transpired...

So when I got home I jumped in a buddies car and he took me down to the local Lotus dealer, I had 1.5 Million on me, so money was of no issue... When we got there a had a look around, some old Elans and Europas were on the floor and then I saw it... a '99 Lotus Elise Motorsport... "That's the one" I said to the car salesman, "The Lotus Motorsport, that's the one I want." 10 Minutes later and a couple of grand down and I was racing my way to the Lotus tuning shop in a bright red Motorsport... I felt great as heads turned to look at a beautiful blonde driving a beautiful car...

I arrived at the tuning shop and got a few eyes there too... I ordered the full works on the engine, including a stage 3 turbo and full performace pipes... I dropped in a ful race spec suspension and got some el cheepo tyres too, I got some strange looks from the sales guy and he asked me, "You want these cheep road car tyres with all these Mods???", "Yes" I said... "OK, Either you're stupid, or you're going drifting" he replied... At that I just smiled at him and we continued to mod the car... They stripped it down to nothing and took out the rear seats, we then replaced all replacable panels with Fibreglass and at the end had the car at aroun 650 KGs. We then moved into the drive train and added a fully customisable gearbox, racing clutch, racing flywheel and a full LSD.

I then hit GT Auto and added a nice set of rims and a double blade wing to the Lotus, man does it look sexy now...

Now it was off to the track, I drove a few kms down to El Captain raceway and hit the garage to set the car up... I changed the suspension to allow the rear to slide, I then lowered the gear ratios and beefed up the LSD on initial acceleration. Some final tune ups and I was ready for action...

I hit the first straight like a rocket until 200km/h when my speed limiter kicked in, this is a drift car after all, not after speed. So I twidled my thumbs down the main straight... Turn 1 a short right hand sweep and the Lotus goes sideways, I countersteer to the left to keep the car heading straight, add a little power and the rear wheels start screaming, What a thril.

The second turn is a long 3rd gear left hander... I swing right then left and tap the power, the Lotus goes sideways again and the tyres are screaming... I tap gas and keep the steering constant for the bend, then plant the gas flat coming out. Then it's full throttle for a bit.

Turn 3 is a left hand sweep at full accel in 5th gear, the Lotus Screaches around the sweep in perfect form..

Turn 4, 5 and 6 are combined right, right, left and the Lotus is all over the road. I work the gas and steering to guide the car wide on the first righ hander then into the second right hander... A slight tap of the breaks throws the Lotus to the left and the arse swings out, in 3rd gear I have the gas flat now and I power out of the corner...

Turn 7 and 8 are a left hand sweep over a rise and a right sweep into a dip. I plant the gas in 4th gear for the left hander and the Lotus gets sideways over the rise, I conrtol the drift and swing the car to the right for the dip, the tyre a squeeling as I plant the gas again.

Turn 9 is a fast left hander that also has a slight rise at the end. I'm flat on the gas as the rear starts getting loose and then swings out. I counter steer and keep the gas flat, 130km/h and the Lotus is a smooth as a babies bottom.

Then it's downhill into turn 10 a sharp 2nd gear right hander. I'm hard on the breaks and I turn the car slightly left and then hard right to swing the rear out, then it's gentle gas to keep the car sideways around the sharp right hander.

Turn 11 and 12 are a complex left, left in 3rd gear. I'm gentle on the throttle here as the camber on the turns is bad. I manage to pull the car sideways around both turns then power down the short straight...

Turn 13 is a fast 4th gear left hander and I power around sideways, as the turn comes to an end it's hard on the breaks and into 3rd gear for a long left hander turn 14. I'm a littl loose from turn 12 and manage to only get half sideways on the entry to turn 14, I plant the gas a the rear swings out on the exit of turn 14.

Turn 15, 16 and 17 are a set of corners, right, right then left all gentle sweeps. I break hard for turn 15 and swing the rear out, maintaining a light throttle and steering keeps me sideways on the short straight then it's right again. Slight tap of the breaks get the car more sideways for that. Then hard on the gas and a slight drift on the gentle left hander. Then it's up to 5th gear for the last two bends, a high speed 5th gear chicane right then left onto the main straight.

I power into the right hander and gently ease off the gas to allow th car a slight right hand drift then it hard on the gas to the left in pure extacy as the lotus slides hard around the left hander, tyres screatching and smoking as I power out the corner and down the straight.

One lap @ El Captain under my belt and a fat smile on my face...

Here are some pics a friend of mine took during the days racing at various tracks...

I've actually being doing a bit of a standard car contest at Autumn Ring (reverse) to find the best out-of-the-box drifter in each category - MR, FR, and RR, and I will probably try 4WD too, only allowing myself an oil change on all cars (important since many are 2nd hand) and slippery tyres. Oh, and road cars only. It's been a lot of fun, and I've been taking notes and pictures. I will write it all up one day.

Only done the MRs so far, and I have by no means tried all of them, but am now holding auditions for the FR sector. The Supra RZ is looking like a contender!

Anyway it's good to see others have gone this way before me and can give stories that I can relate to:)
