Anyone heard of it?

It's a free virtual machine program that runs from windows that lets you install other operating systems as virtual machines.

I have just installed and am now posting from Ubuntu!

This is an old laptop so it's to too smooth as XP is still running underneath, but it works well.

This leads me to my next question. Can you get MSN messenger on Ubuntu?1

You can get Trillian which will sign up to the MSN network...

MS Virtual PC is also free and will let you install and test misc. OSs. I'm actually in a Virtual PC right now - Just re-installed due to crappy performance, so now I'm keeping everything bar games and Messenger in the Virtual Machine... Works like a charm - Hardly any performance hit whatsoever...

[Edit:] The cool thing about VMWare is that you can install it on any platform, and move your virtual machines back and forth - no minding the underlying OS.

[Edit2:] Hadn't realised that VMWare was "giving" their small server thing away. We use their ESX at work and that's too cool. You can move "live" servers between your ESX servers so you can take them off line for eg. maintenance.. - Next years budget has 3 Sunfire V40z Quad AMD Quad Core Opterons each with 32 gigs of ram... Nice toys indeed..

Cool, what AV should i put on it? I'm fairly new to linux.

I've never really bothered putting AV onto Linux Boxes.. - At least not as an AV for the System. I've put it on as AV for, say, a mailserver running on Linux.

Have you Googled young man ?...

Not yet. I'm sure there are loads out there, but I wanted to get a recommendation from the experts!

Ubuntu comes with Gaim installed. Its located in Applications>Internet.

As for antivirus, there is a version of AVG available. There really is no point, though. ;)

VMware probably isn't the "next big thing" that its industry hype and IPO would suggest, but it is a useful tool. I did an extensive writeup of installing a beta of Vista into a VMware environment.

Also theres another free (and open source) program out there called Virtualbox, http://www.virtualbox.org/ .

I use both Vbox and VMware quite often (FC6 / OSx86 / ReactOS / Etc....) and as far as I can tell they both run VM's at about the same speed, and have all the same general options for VM's. Although I like VBox's interface a bit better as its easier to set up stuff in.
