The K70 was a four-door family car developed by NSU. It was meant to replace their rotary powered Ro 80. When NSU wanted to present the K70 at the 1969 Geneva Auto Show, they wanted to show a wider public. After much talk, the K70 was removed from the NSU show stand the eve before the show and Volkswagen presented the car. Twenty-Three NSU badged K70s were built.
Volkswagen needed a new family car to replace the Type 4. The K70 was a perfect choice. It completely changed Volkswagen's image forever. This was their first car with a front engine, front drive layout powered by a watercooled engine rather than an aircooled unit.
In 1973, Volkswagen made a replacement for the K70, the Passat. From 1970 to 1975, VW produced 211,127 K70s. In 1975, NSU decided to withdraw the K70 from production. The K70 is a very important car for VW making it the starting point of a new chapter for the brand.
