The ninth-generation Volkswagen Passat will celebrate its world premiere this fall but with a simplified lineup as the midsize family car is going to be sold strictly as a wagon. In the meantime, the folks from Wolfsburg are providing a comprehensive preview of the revamped model, which will be among the first VW-badged cars to ride on the MQB Evo platform, alongside the 2024 Tiguan. In fact, the two models will share most of the hardware.

At 4917 millimeters (193.5 inches) long, the new Passat Variant will be 144 mm (5.6 in) longer than its predecessor. A good chunk of that stretch can be found in the wheelbase, elongated by 50 mm (1.96 in) to 2841 mm (111.8 in). Width is up by 20 mm (0.7 in) to 1852 mm (72.9 in) and height has ever so slightly increased by 7 mm (0.2 in) to 1482 mm (58.3 in).

What we said about the 2024 Tiguan when the crossover was teased about a month ago generally applies to the 2024 Passat as well. Both get a fully digital instrument cluster measuring 10.25 inches along with a tablet-like 12.9-inch infotainment. At an additional cost, the latter can be upgraded to a 15-inch touchscreen. Speaking of features that cost extra, a head-up display projecting information straight onto the windscreen will be offered as well.

The similarities continue underneath the hood where VW intends to install a variety of gasoline, mild-hybrid gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The PHEVs will offer a combined output from 201 hp (150 kW) to 268 hp (200 kW) and an electric range of up to 75 miles (120 km). The German brand doesn't go into details about the battery, only saying it supports DC charging.

The next-gen Passat will be joined by the mechanically related 2024 Skoda Superb. Unlike the long-roof-only VW, the equivalent Czech model will continue in both sedan (technically, it's a liftback/hatchback) and wagon body styles. All three MQB Evo-based cars will be assembled in Bratislava, Slovakia.

I kinda like how it looks, though I can't get really excited about a car that's never coming into the US in the first place.

Interior looks bad but the exterior is shaping up nicely in my opinion.

Volkswagen killed the Passat in the United States after the 2022MY but the midsize family car soldiered on in Europe with its more sophisticated MQB underpinnings. [...] The new B9 comes strictly as a wagon as the sedan is officially dead.

Featuring revised underpinnings (MQB Evo) shared with the upcoming next-gen Tiguan and Golf Mk8 facelift, the 2024 Passat Variant is considerably larger than the old Euro-spec B8. It now stretches at 193.5 inches (4917 millimeters) in length, therefore making it a substantial 5.7 in (144 mm) longer than before. Width is up by 0.8 in (20 mm) to 72.9 in (1852 mm) while height is largely unchanged, at 59.2 in (1506 mm). As for the wheelbase, it has been elongated by 1.97 in (50 mm) to 111.8 in (2841 mm).

The engine lineup is comprehensive and it includes a mild-hybrid gasoline unit for the first time in the Passat's history. It's a 1.5-liter eTSI cylinder deactivation technology and 148 horsepower (110 kilowatts). Up next is a bigger 2.0 TSI with 201 hp (150 kW) in front-wheel-drive flavor and a more potent configuration with 261 hp (195 kW) and 4Motion all-wheel drive.

If you'll still want a diesel in 2024, VW has got you covered with its 2.0 TDI offered in three states of tune: 121 hp (90 kW) and 148 hp (110 kW) as FWD models and 190 hp (142 kW) with AWD. All gasoline and diesel versions of the new Passat route power to the road via a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Then there are the plug-in hybrids marketed as "eHybrid" models. The base variant offers 201 hp (150 kW) and 258 pound-feet (350 Newton-meters) of torque whereas the more potent model pushes out 268 hp (200 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), making it the strongest Passat money can buy. These two PHEVs get a 1.5-liter TSI, a six-speed DSG, and a 19.7-kWh battery pack providing up to 62 miles (100 kilometers) of electric range.

With the new-generation Passat, VW has implemented support for DC fast-charging at 50 kW to juice up the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 25 minutes. With the battery charged and a full tank of gas (11.9 gallons or 45 liters), you'll be able to drive for around 621 miles (1,000 kilometers) before having to refuel.

Making its public debut next week at IAA Munich, the 2024 VW Passat is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of next year. It won't be built in Germany anymore as production is moving to Bratislava, Slovakia where it's going to be assembled alongside the new Skoda Superb. Unlike the wagon-only Passat, its Czech sibling will retain both liftback and wagon body styles.

Skoda Superb, Skoda's version of the Passat, comes in a sedan and has knobs for HVAC controls!! I think it looks like a much better looking car than the Passat

The list with engines includes the usual VAG suspects, starting with a 1.5-liter gasoline unit with a mild-hybrid setup. It produces 150 hp (110 kW) and is available strictly with front-wheel drive. The larger 2.0-liter mill can be had with 204 hp (150 kW) or 265 hp (195 kW), with the latter being offered with all-wheel drive.

On the diesel side, there's only a 2.0-liter with either 150 hp (110 kW) and FWD or 193 hp (142 kW) and AWD. Regardless of the engine you go for, Skoda installs a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. Speaking of the gearbox, the lever has been relocated to the steering wheel column to free up space between the seats.

Strictly a wagon, the plug-in hybrid Superb combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor for a total system output of 204 hp (150 kW). Shared with the new Kodiaq as well, the electrified setup is FWD-only and comes with a six-speed DSG. Thanks to a 25.7-kWh battery pack, it'll do more than 62 miles (100 kilometers) without sipping any gasoline. It can be charged at up to 50 kW, in which case it'll take 25 minutes to go from 0 to 80 percent. You also get some juice back in the battery thanks to brake energy recuperation.
