The nominations are in, and now comes the important part... Voting to widdle down the list of cars to that we can have 3-5 top-spots ready to duke it out for the final vote.

Rules are simple: Vote for the car you like, explain why, wait three days. Its pretty simple...

The finalists are:

VW Golf/Rabbit
Honda Civic
Suzuki SX4
Suzuki Swift
Mazda3
Ford Fiesta
Seat Ibiza
Mini Cooper/One
Honda Jazz/Fit
Vauxhall Corsa
Renault Clio
Ford Focus MKII
Mitsubishi Colt

You have three days to vote/debate, and then I will move the top cars into the next round while I will create the nomination thread for the next car class. If you want a hint as to what it will be next time, you would logically move up to the next car size, and place a modest budget on top of that. More on that a few days from now...

---

I'm still going to move for the Golf/Rabbit. Simply put, it is the world standard when it comes to small automobiles, offering class-leading performance and quality a decent price. Outside of that, you get to buy into that wonderful VW Occult, which is unlike any other group of owners I've met.

Sweet.

The Golf isn't bad, but to qualify for the sub-16,000 pound mark, you'd have to go for the crappier versions... which are just that: crap.

Whereas you can get an almost-top-of-the-line Focus for less than 16,000 quid. In fact, the Focus I'm talking about is the Titanium; one level below the ST, and it's 122 quid shy of the 16,000 mark.

I went for the Civic, because the Rabbit has that coarse 5 cylinder engine, and lacks the reliability of the Civic. Did I mention that the interior is awesome? :sly:

Focus MkII gets it from me.

While the SEAT is good, it doesn't have the same strength in depth that the Focus has.

Vote for the Mazda 3 or I’ll rip out your trachea and stomp on it.

I changed my mind. I took a cruise in my buddy's 3 yesterday and remembered what the Rabbit is totally missing: sport. The steering and handling of the 3 are pretty darn good. I'm not a fan of the massive oversteer attainable by just letting off the throttle in a turn, but that aside the car is quite fun to drive. Nice interior too.

I would've voted for Mazda3 as I own one, but honestly I think the BEST is the Golf. Though it's expensive...

I voted for the honda civic, due to it's history and reliability. It feels sporty and very fun to drive. The Golf on the other hand...

Off-Topic: ExigeExcel thanks for putting me in your signature. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside... :guilty: JK. Now I feel bad about myself. :indiff:

I changed my mind. I just love the MkII Focus more than any other "compact" or hatchback. It's just perfect. The Seat, Suzuki Swift, and Fiesta are a close second...but psh, Focus FTW!

The only cars I've gotten a chance to drive are the Civic and the Rabbit, I've ridden in a Mazda 3 and I can see why everyone likes it. I was very impressed by it.

I think most of those cars we don't even get in the states so I couldn't really speak for them when I cast my vote. I don't even know what a Seat Ibiza is (yes I can google it) and the Fiesta will always be that crappy little Ford car from the 80's...or was that the Feistva?

There was a Fiesta and a Festiva if memory serves me correctly. The Festiva was essentially a Mazda 323 wasn't it? I tried not to pay attention to Ford in those days since I hated 95% of everything they sold--minus the obvious Mustang 5.0.

The Mazda3 is brilliant, and the interior isn't as bad as Jeremy Clarkson says it is. And since the MkII Focus is more powerful, looks better, and has an even nicer looking interior I'd definately say it should win hands down. Seats are cool cars, especially since they're basicaly German underneath.

America will never get it though so I can't comment on the MkII Focus, I've never even seen one, let alone ridden in one.

I'd imagine it rides better than the Mazda3 since it came out afterwards and has more power throughout the trim levels on average and some tweaks here and there.

Can someone please explain the reasoning behind the votes for the oversized, over weight and over priced VW Golf?

This board has an inordinate number of Volkswagen fans. There's really no other explanation.

For the record, I voted for the most deserving candidate. :D

EDIT: THERE HAD BETTER BE A RUNOFF AFTER THIS SO THE CIVIC HAS A CHANCE!!!

I'm pretty sure the Mazda 121 was a fiesta  Hell, I even saw one and was confused when it said 121 on the back.

You should feel better after a rant like that.

I'd like to see a Mazda 3, a Honda Civic, and a VW Rabbit on a racetrack. I bet it'd be a battle between the Rabbit and Civic. With the Mazda comfortably in the lead, of course. The Rabbit has no sportiness whatsoever but is excessively comfortable (yawn) and the Civic is about as pedestrian as it gets.

The Ford Festiva was the Mazda 121

I thought the Kia Pride was the Festiva was the US Mazda 121, whereas the EU Mazda 121 was a Mk4 (sleepyeye) Fiesta.

Anyway, it's amazing how wrong 9 people can be. The Mk2 Focus killed the Golf Mk5.

It's because Americans have zero clue on what this car is like, how can we truthfully vote for something we've never seen?

Silly me nominating the spaceship appliance, thinking that anyone with a rational mind and noticing the Rabbits "sketchy" reliability would pick the Civic.

Oh I'm not doubting it's a great car, but you can't expect people to vote for it when they aren't familiar with it.

Wow, a lot of people are hating on the Golf/Rabbit. Its a damn-good car, and I loved it when I had my time with it. Quite frankly, if I can get some money together hopefully by the end of the year, I may be considering buying a Rabbit or an Astra... Of course, that likely depends on how much money I have (aka not much)... But it never hurts to look!

If I may quote some figures on the current issue between the Mazda3, Honda Civic, and VW Golf/Rabbit (2.5L)...

In the more recent test of Car and Driver's "Sensible Shoes" comparison, the VW Golf/Rabbit (first) beat-out the Mazda3 (second) and Honda Civic (third) in an all-out battle of the basic models. When it came down to the sporty side of the equation, the VW and Honda took the top-spot in top-speed, but the Mazda3 will get there faster than the other two, due mostly to the lower weight and more power of the 2.3L engine.

Performance of the cars were similar as well, the Mazda leading the pack again with its sporty credentials with more power and a lower weight, as well as higher-class rubber. The Golf/Rabbit and Civic were nearly identical performance wise, however the VW was able to brake in shorter distances from 60 MPH, however was off slightly on the skidpad and in the lane-change.

What it came down to with C/D, and generally speaking most VW drivers, is that the Golf/Rabbit has a very "grown-up" feel to it. Sure, it can play ball with the sportier and more "youthful" Japanese competition, but that isn't necessarily what it is meant to do.

I dunno. I like the way the cars are screwed together, I like the way they feel inside and out, I like the way it looks, I like the way it performs, etc. Its a lovely car all the way around, and quite frankly, the only other car that I'd rather have would probably be the Jetta, followed of course by the Astra.

How the **** does the Rabbit and Civic beat the Mazda3 on sportiness? I call Bull**** here. If the Civic Si and Rabbit R32 were pitted up against the Mazdaspeed3 they would lose quite badly. Base models versus base models the Mazda3 still wins.
