VOTE for Best Compact Car!

Can't believe I voted for a Ford but the MkII Focus is a good car and is priced well here in Australia, so is some of the others but I think Focus has the edge overall.

How the **** does the Rabbit and Civic beat the Mazda3 on sportiness? I call Bull**** here. If the Civic Si and Rabbit R32 were pitted up against the Mazdaspeed3 they would lose quite badly. Base models versus base models the Mazda3 still wins.

Who said that? I clearly pointed out that the Mazda was faster than BOTH the VW and the Honda in every category. The VW only won because of its 'adult' nature by comparison to the two Japanese offerings, mainly because it offered the best compromise between sport and comfort...

Where have I heard that before? The GTI? The R32?

...I'll take my sophistication any day, but that being said, the Mazda3 is still a helluva lot of fun. But, IMO, that doesn't make it the best car overall...

True, when I made my vote I wasnt even thinking of Mazdaspeed (MPS here), GTI, R32, ST (XR5 Turbo here), Ralliart, Cooper S etc versions of these compact cars.

I think we should have a 'most over-rated car' thread.

The AE86 would receive 45 votes - one plus Duke editing the poll for another 44; the 240SX would receive 38 votes for the same reason, and the Mazda 3 would trounce them all with 2,500 votes, because hopefully it would come out in that thread that the Mazda 3 really is just an economy car with alloy wheels and marginally tuned suspension, and Mazda really just paid off all the car magazines for those "it's sporty" writeups.

The really odd trend about this poll is not the Golf/Rabbit, because as I mentioned we do have an inordinate number of Volkswagen people here, but the support of the Mazda 3. I just can't understand the love - it's good, but not great.

I thought the Kia Pride was the Festiva was the US Mazda 121, whereas the EU Mazda 121 was a Mk4 (sleepyeye) Fiesta.

Ummm.... yah, kinda

This one, being based on the Mazda 121 and built by Kia between 1988 and 1993, which was the one sent to the US market. The Mazda 121 was also the J-spec version of the Ford Festiva.

Later, in 1995, a longer version of the Festiva was produced, under the name Ford Festiva Avila, only to be sold in Venezuela and Colombia, but produced in Venezuela.

That's because the price limitation made us think we could go as far as the money limit... hence why I suggested the Fiesta ST and the Polo GTI, instead of the Focus ST and the Golf GTI... and that's where we're having trouble with the voting as well, me thinks.

People are voting for the Civic, thinking of the Civic Type R, which because of the limitations of the competition, shouldn't be allowed, not the Focus ST, nor the Golf GTI, and so on and so forth

For the most part, the Mazda3 is really only good with the 'S' package equipped. I spent some time in a 3i, and while it was a good car, it certainly wasn't as nice as the other 3s models I had been in/around. More or less for me, it comes down to the engine combined with a good suspension... And while the 3 has that in the 'S' trim, the VW has it standard. Plus, you would likely be more happy with a 'stripper' Rabbit than a 'stripper' 3i...

I don't really like them - but come on people, the Minis' so good it hurts!

I was the only one to vote Ford Fiesta? damn.. that's the only one that hasn't participated the beauty contest.

Hey, I thought we were comparing the versions you could buy within the budget?

The love for the Mazda3 is because it's pretty nifty driving machine. I agree that it's not great, but that's simply because the Protege was better (wahahaha!!!)

Better get used to it... we Mazda-philes are the new Honda-drones of the car world...

We (Australians) have always had serious Mazda-philes, Honda-drones are only appearing lately.
