I'd agree with you if this was a 'Most Beautiful Italian Car' thread, the 288 GTO is better looking - But the F40 is a better car in every other respect.

Well, the 288 GTO Evo isn't exactly pretty, but I like it better than the F40. It's probably because it's faster, shame they didn't make the 650hp version as the F40. After that, the F40 seems watered down. I guess Ferrari were ahead of their time with the horsepower, which is why it just turned out to be a test car in the development for the F40. Too bad Ferrari doesn't make cars like the F40 anymore.
 
Lamborghini Countach because it was so awesome looking, and I think set the tone for looks.

I say Korea or France next. Korea preferably.
 
The Alfa 75 (caled the Milano in the US and Canada) because i'm buying one.

Completely disregarding price and image, the FXX is not unlike the F40...

In regard to the WOW factor, well thats going to be entirely subjective, what WOWs one person will leave another totally un-moved.

I would however say that the performance gap is wide open for debate, taking the average family car (a Focus in the UK) I would say that the performance gap is still present and may even be greater.

Every era has produced specific cars that in the right hands and on the right road could give almost anything a run for its money, just think how long the Lotus/Caterham 7 has been about.

What has changed is in part the nature of the gap, in the past in was almost entirely power and performance figure related, now technology has to be included. I mean how many average road cars have ceramic brakes as a factory option?

I mean the gap has arguably grown so much that some commentators say that the top end of the market has gone beyond supercars and into a new generation of hypercars.

I'm sticking with my original pick, the Miura.
 
Scaff, I think he meant to say the gap between the earlier breed of supercars and the rest of all cars at the time was huge, whereas now there is no significant gap anywhere in any category, price, top speed or acceleration.

Thats exactly what I took it to mean and I would personally have to say I would disagree with that, the gap certainly still exists, but it does depend on how exactly you define a supercar (which is in itself a difficult thing to do).

For me there is far more to a supercar that just the sum of its parts or raw figures, and yes some modern cars in other categories are capable of matching or beating supercars in these areas.

However cars of this nature have almost always existed, hence my example of the Lotus/Caterham 7. No one would every describe it as a supercar, yet as I said in the right hands and on the right road its capable of humbling a lot of supercars.

My argument is that supercars have ceased to simply just push the boundaries of the performance figures alone, and its now as much about technology, materials and other far harder to define areas.

Additionally a large part of what arguably makes a supercar a supercar is about the very WOW factor being discussed, and certainly modern supercars have not lost that lead. Simple modern example is the Zonda, a car that looks like little else on earth, it certainly ticks the WOW box.

They're both performance flagships, other than that they're based on dfference sides of the "how to get the ultimate" coin, the F40 was just bare bones, you and the car whereas the Enzo is full of electronic trickery and engineering.

I voted for the Fiat 500R.
 
Pagani Zonda FTW! I just love its fighter jet looks, half-spoilers, and the "rocket pack" exhaust.

The Ferrari F40 could have been my second pick. It is undoubtedly one of, if not the most iconic cars of my childhood. The only thing that tops it is the Countach in that arena, but everything else I had at the time was an F40.

Too bad kids these days didn't grow up in an era where they had cars like the Countach, F40, 959, Diablo, F50 etc all within a few years...

I have to say all those cars spent a lot of time on my walls as a child. Maybe the Diablo not so much but I built a model of it when I was younger.
 
I had to go with the F430. It's brilliantly fast, looks good, sounds great, and is apparently very tame on the road as well. Best all-around Italian car. 👍

However, if the poll were for for best FANTASY car, I'd have to go with the Zonda.:sly:
 
The final poll here is going to be fantastic - the Zonda, F40, and Miura are running an incredible horserace - it'll be interesting to see how it shakes down when the others are forced to vote for one of the top ones. This is much closer than I'd have imagined, but the real surprise for me is the popularity of the Zonda - I don't quite understand the attraction.

Yes, you must conduct each coutnry's final nominee vote in the same fashion.

The Zonda has been the segment's benchmark since it was released. That is saying a lot, considering how many cars are being put out these days...

Yeah - as exigeracer said - gotta do em all that way. Just do that vote with the nominations for the next country. (France!)
 
The Pagani has become the benchmark in Europe? Thats awesome that an upstart company like that could create such a stir in such a short period of time. Unfortunately, the Zonda still isn't legal in the US, and the few models that are here are either track-only or show-only. I've personally only seen them on the internet, in magazines, and on television, and my God are they great.

I'm crossing my figners that the next-gen Zonda comes Stateside, as even Pagani himself has said that he wants to come to the US market. Hopefully then it can become a benchmark too, otherwise we are limited to the Enzo, Z06 and 911 setting the standards in most cases.
 
The funny thing about "show only" laws is that they don't go into effect until your car is impounded, like Billy Gate's multiple 959's. Anyways, I went with the Cizeta. Lambo styling (pulled off better), Ferrari engined (spectacularly over the top) and a cool "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" mantra.

Yes, the Bugatti models would be included here assuming we will be using the French for the next thread. It sounds as though it should be it, the only other suggestion thus far has been Korea...

I dunno. I was kinda bored so I decided to do an "overdone explanation of the terms of use in the "Best ___ Car" thread."

I apoligize for your confusion.
 
Ok then no problem. What I was stating was that my list of favorite Italian cars was near endless! Well at east I know the TOU now! :lol:
