Vroom...Are We Desensitised To Real Car Sounds in GT5?

Hey guys. Lots of people complain about the sounds of the cars in Gran Turismo 5. Now, theres one thing that baffles me about this logic. Given the sheer time that PD have been doing GT games and the overall stellar quality, don't you think they would 'notice' if there was an issue with sound on a major level? Are we simply accustomed to 'over exaggerated' sounds in games because its more invigorating than how it would be in the real world?

Anyway just wanted to ask considering the depth and dedication PD put into their work how something like sound would just be a 'weak point'.

I've seen some videos of Forza 4 and the sound is much more realistic.

However, that sound is gonna drive people crazy if you have family, or even neighbours. It's a lot more realistic, but also a lot more aggressive sound. GT5 might be more like a blender than a full breed V8, but a blender is far easier to live with...

Don't know if that's a deliberate choise PD has made or if it's just the way things turned out.

If you allow some sarcasm:

GT5 - We Love Cars

Forza 4 - We Love Cars More Than We Love Our Partners And Neighbours

Well, I have something to say about that.

I´ve got a car wich has an Audi 1.8 Turbo engine. And when I AM DRIVING THE CAR, almost everything I heard is the "hiss" of the turbo. You could say it´s completely "undramatic". The same happened in GT5, in the Audi TT 1.8 t (20v)

When I am driving with the side windows down, the exaust gets more present, but in GT you cant "get the side windows down".

So, even if you want the engine to blow you away, it doesn´t happen in real life, in that kind of cars at least.

So far, the sound in GT5 is quite realistic in my opinion.

I just don't like how they dubbed sounds over some of the cars in the Spec II intro.

I agree with that, a lot of cars sound muffled when you are in them simply because of the way they are. I would like to point out though that some of the car noises we get are abysmal and really do sound nothing like they do in real life. The M3 is a prime example of that, try listening to the premium model from the chase cam and it sounds nothing like the real thing when you are outside of it, I have no idea what they sound like from the inside but if the outside noise is anything to go by they seriously got it wrong.

A lot of games like Forza and various others make the noise more prominent and go over the top with it, having said that I'd rather they do that than make it sound like a synthesised vacuum cleaner

My Supra happens to sound like a vacuum cleaner, thank you. ;)

And I'm being honest. Slap a racing muffler on it in GT5, and it snarls nicely. Okay, some cars aren't right, and call me desensitized or whatever, but I really don't mind with everything else being so well done. Not everything, literally, I still have my 15 gripes with GT5, like a paint shop with no paint, but the whole experience... I just can't get enough of this game. Even in the face of "that other game" coming out today in America.

And with that, after one more peek at the boards, I'm off to experience Spec II while I have the energy - home from work sick. Cough...

Did you hear the Spec 1 intro. This new one is much bettter, and most if not all sound like the real thing.

I play bumper cam and it's muffled a bit but just go to chase cam and the sound comes alive.

I think it's fine!

I have a twin turbo 06 350z and a 08 e92 m3 and the M3 sounds nothing not even near what an m3 sounds like in real life on the other hand the z sounds a little more realistic. Hard to capture the v8 sounds I geuss?

watch a 600+HP tuned car on youtube, then compare that to GT....not even close...GT's sound design will never give you the chills, all blenders on high speed
