R-Class Reprise? VW Aims High With New Crossover

WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen boss Wolfgang Bernhard has given the production green light to an upmarket crossover vehicle in the mold of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class.

The new seven seater, to be positioned between the Passat and the Phaeton, will be based on an upcoming modular platform structure under development at Audi. It is tentatively planned to go on sale in 2009, according to a report published today by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

Part of an upmarket product offensive masterminded by Bernhard, the new Volkswagen crossover will join second-generation versions of the Phaeton and Touareg due out in 2010, with which it will share key components such as drivelines, at the top end of the German carmaker's lineup.

The new crossover is a separate project from Project-M, the North America-based minivan project Volkswagen is working on with Chrysler. It's likely to offer a choice of front- and four-wheel drive and come with V6 and V8 gasoline and diesel engines. Auto Motor und Sport reports that an entry-level version of the new vehicle may also be sold with an uprated version of Volkswagen's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine — as used in the Golf GTI.

If theyre gonna use the chassis that im thinking off it could be a very exciting driver.

*Sigh* When will VW get a clue and bring the Polo and/or Fox over here so they can get back to their "people's car" roots?

I'd still take the Merc. If people are going to buy these cars, a large amount of their reasoning is likely to be badge snobbery, and a VeeDub on the front ain't gonna cut it.

Also, if it's going to look like that above design...

Merrily, I pronounce yonder automobile to be moste blande!

👎 Hate the R-Class and hate this one even more because it looks like a Touraeg that's had it's top chopped.

Well the R-Class isn't that bad, and I think its an allright idea for VW to undercut it just a bit. Reviews of the R-Class have been great, but I think public reaction to the vehicle has been slow because they don't know what it is.

To be completely honest, I thought I would hate it, but after tinkering around with one (an R500), I came away very impressed. Quite frankly, it might be one of the best touring vehicles out there today, and I couldn't think of a better vehicle to be taking to Chicago on a weekend trip...
