Perhaps one of the this years strangest concept cars, Volkswagon has just recently announced the Crafter Atacama concept van. Desined to be a fresh take on the Crafter van, this one desinged to be an off-road vehicle named after the Atacama Desert.

Some specs:
  • VW Crafter, Kombi short wheelbase.
  • Five cylinder turbo-diesel with charge air cooler, w/ 6 speed tranny
  • 164 HP
  • 4WD

It's certainly a rather unique vehicle. I will admit, with the exception of the side windows, it's kinda cool, in a funky way. Maybe it's the fact that I've always loved the idea of 4x4 off-road vans. The ladder is an interesting touch, too.

Oh, and on the issue of those windows:
The unique side window design demonstrates the integration of exterior and interior. The side window design both relaxes and extends the lines on the side of the Atacama and makes interesting applications for the interior possible. The wedge in the panes can be used as an assembly and securing point for a functional interior, for stowage purposes for example, or as securing points for an upper sleeping level. The designer responsible, Romain Chareyre, explains: "The design study shows further potential for the Crafter in the leisure and fun segment".

I can't help but think "Mercedes Viano" when I look at it.

Also, if this concept were to ever make production (99% chance it won't), it would almost certainley be hovering around the £35k mark.

Oh, come on now. Even if you don't like, you have to admit it has it's own "charm" :D
I still like it, though. I guess I'm a sucker for the weird [cars].

The front lights look like they could have gone onto the new Ford Transit.

Those rear-most side windows are probably as annoying to the driver as Carmen Miranda would be sitting in front of you in a movie theater.

I give it an "F" for the frontal treatment, but then, that's a problem that a lot of VW and Audi concepts have...

the rest of it is stunning. I wouldn't mind seeing one of those on the road with a more realistic front end.

Typical VW-Audi concept... wonderful, clean body lines, interesting and engaging shapes, and a god-awfully ugly schnoz to ruin it.

I would NOT want to take that crawling. It's taller than it is wide!

But you can't discount the funk factor. Groovy, man!

It's not ugly. It's rather well proportioned, and seems to hold itself together quite well. There's really no bad angles on it, either. It's nothing like the SsangYong cars or Hyundai concepts.

I still want nothing to do with it anyway.

Now THAT is a conversion van extrordinaire!

I really like it, cept for the Headlights. :yuck:

I love it, save the Fusion-style front end.

Couldnt they have made something a little more iconic, reminiscent of the VW van, or at least something that resembles a Touraeg or Q7?

All aboard the Hippie-Mobile!!! *train noises* Two tone... Flower Power man, BIO DIESEL, groovy dude.
