As previously reported, Volkswagen is planning to unveil the "Iroc" concept car in late August — a preview of the forthcoming Scirocco coupe. But another new Volkswagen may also make its debut this month. According to the latest issue of Motor Trend, VW may be getting ready to bring a model smaller than the Rabbit to the North American market. The magazine suggests the car could use the Fox nameplate. In June, Canadian Driver reported that VW would launch a new model in August that is "even less expensive" than the Rabbit. Stay tuned…

Yes, the VW Fox. I've talked about it like a gazillion times, and now I'm very happy to share that news with you. My biggest question would be, how much? With the Rabbit allready as low as $14,990 USD. According to Volkswagen DE and the use of a currency converter, starting prices should be about $11,500 USD.

...Awesome, but what do ya'all think?
 
Might be too small for America, IMO. The Polo would be a better fit if it could price it far enough below the Rabbit. In fact, IIRC, that Motor Trend article specifically mentions the Polo notchback sedan as a candidate for NA sales.
 
Great. Now Rabbit and Fox are almost the same size. That will confuse the kids, "Dad, why is the bunny bigger than the fox?".

On topic: SWEET! No need for hybirds! (Buy a diesel fox if you REALLY want to save mother earth)
 
I had one of the previous Foxes, and although it was barely smaller than the MKII Jetta of the time, it was smaller no less. I don't think the Fox would be too small, but it would be smaller closer in size to the Yaris, no?

But if they are bringing the Polo to the US, why change the name to Fox when they allready sell the Fox? To confuse Volkswagen fans even more, there used to be a VW Fox Polo, so how do you like those particular apples?

Small cars like that could have a market again in the US. If I can pick up a brand-new Vee-Dub that performs better than my current MKIII Jetta for a reasonable ammount of money, I don't see what the problem is.

A car like this could sell well in the US, especially when the diesel version can get up to 75 MPG. Using that alone as a selling point could move a lot of cars, especially with the price of fuel hovering around $3 a gallon...
 
Diesel?! This is the United States!

EDIT: the 75mpg figure is wrong; you're using imperial gallons which are about 1.2 of our gallons. 75mpg over there is 63mpg here. I question that figure highly though because according to Volkswagen Europe, the gas version makes just 41mpg (1.4) or 46mpg (1.2) and that's in imperial gallons, not US gallons. For it to jump 34mpg, it'd have to be one hell of a diesel.
 
Yes, I was wrong. I had forgotten that the diesel engine out of the Lupo didn't carry over with the transition to the Fox.

Chances are, if the car was sold in the US it would use the 1.4L gasoline engine, so you would be right there. But in a cheap car that is capable of about 41 MPG on the highway is pretty damn good. Of course, the Toyota Yaris is about the same, but I'd rather be in a Volkswagen than a Toyota any day...

BTW:

Its the Polo that has the stuff I was thinking of. The VW Polo S 1.4 TDI gets about 57 MPG on the highway (yes, thats US MPG) and about 40 MPG in the city. Considering that it isn't much smaller than the Rabbit, I suppose it could be badged as the Fox in the US, and it too could be sold on fuel economy.

...That is of course if they can get the diesel engine clean enough for US standards...

But even if they sold the gasoline versions in the US, an average 35 MPG isn't too bad on the 1.4L gasoline version, of which I belive competes against the Honda Jazz in Europe...
 
Lupos are so cool looking. Why can't we get something like that in the U.S. market? And we still don't have the latest version of Swift. :rolleyes:
 
Yes indeed - it and the Forenza would be the Daewoo Nubira if Daewoo hadn't been pulled out of the U.S. market (meanwhile what would be the Lanos is now sold as the Chevrolet Aveo and the Leganza is the Suzuki Verona).

We also have the Aerio, but it's not a true hatchback - more of a wagon. A good car though 👍
 
Yes, and in your biased opinion NOTHING is better than a Toyota.

Last time I was in a Yaris (aka, not that long ago) I could have sworn the tiny plastic pieces were pulled out of my Brother's Power Wheel Silverado. The car felt so unbeliveably cheap, it was laughable, especially when compared to the Fit and Rabbit. Granted, the Yaris does start as low as $10K, but even the Rio5 and Aveo felt like they were screwed together a bit better.
 
Toyota's have always had quirks in the interior on the cheaper end models. Mechanically, they tend to be more sound than Europes or Korea's offereings. When paying 10k for a car, I'd rather it runs longer than think the interior is cheap. They last time I was in a Rio, it was a poor hosh posh of stuff. VW does do a nicer job on initial quality, but you pay for it too.
 
Azuremen should be made the president of discussing small car interiors and durability for that post. All true.

When you buy the things, you know the interior will be cheap. But you usually buy them because you haven't got enough cash to get a real car. So what you really want is something that will last, and not go through any more of your already small amount of money.

You can't expect Lexus in a $10K Toyota, but you can expect their quality to be on-par with others, no?

List on a base Rio (which presumably shares its interior with the Rio5) is $10600. And it's got 110 horsepower. Penalty box? It's a ****ing jail cell.

You can't expect Lexus in a $10K Toyota, but you can expect their quality to be on-par with others, no?

Since when is 110 BHP bad? When your Kia weighs in at next-to-nothing, 110 BHP is plenty of juice to get the car going. My Jetta only has 115 BHP, and considering it probably has atleast an extra 600+ lbs over the Kia, my car stands to be much slower.
 
The Kia Rio weighs about as much as my Corolla... and my Corolla has more power and better gas milage. The Rio's I drove were completely gutless, compared to gutless cars. My 94 Tercel with about 85HP felt as fast, and both the Kia and Tercel were manuals. Though the Terc did have a 4 speed :p

M5, feel free to get the numbers if I am mistaken, nut sure what the actual weight is on the Kia Rio anymore, but most cars are at 2500lbs to start with these days.
 
The Rio5 isn't too bad (you couldn't convince me to buy the regular sedan), having 110 BHP and 0-60 in about 10 seconds. Funny enough, my '96 Jetta is about as fast and gets similar fuel economy (according to the C/D test). I wouldn't consider it a penalty box by comparison to a Yaris, but you still can't hide the fact that it is a Kia. But the car is built exceptionally well, plastic quality is on par with the majority of it's competition, and the overall drive/refinement works out pretty well.

Granted, if I'm shopping in that category, the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, and VW Rabbit are the top-picks overall. But I'd go with a Kia over the Hyundai, Dodge or Suzuki any day...
 
I hope they bring these here, because unless the Rabbits going on a low octane diet, VW doesn't have a subcompact!
 
Exactly. I love the Rabbit with every thread of my VW-fan body, but the fact still stands that it isn't the Golf anymore. They need a small four cylinder model for cheapasses like me, something that gets better fuel mileage than my current Jetta (unlike the Rabbit, which barely surpasses it).
