I recently acquired a new 5 lb dry-chem fire extinguisher. The ideal place for me to mount it happens to be in a horizontal orientation.

Is it it okay to horizontally mount a dry chemical fire extinuisher, or must it be vertically mounted?

There were no instructions pertaining to this on the bottle, and I just wanted to get an opinion from someone else before I go drilling holes in the walls.

I would assume that you're choosing to mount it in the studs, correct? If that is in fact the case, it would have to be vertical. But then again, I've got no idea how things things are supposed to work, and quite honestly, I'm not sure why it didn't come with instructions as best to install it in your home...

...Does the local fire marshal make house calls?

As long as I hit a stud, I'll be happy. I can use a drywall anchor for the second hole in the bracket.

I'm just concerned that if I mount it horizontally that the pickup or tube inside (I too have no idea what the internals look like) won't suck the powder out properly if it's settled to one side of the bottle.

With a regular shake-up, it shouldn't compact, but it'll still settle a bit.

you should really mount it vertically but it will work just fine horizontally provided it doesn't go beyond it's use date.

Fire Marshall's want it vertical 'cause you have to paint a bright red stripe from the bottom of the wall, to the ceiling with the words 'fire extinguisher' down the middle of it so those far away know where to find it.

However, in your home, you can mount it any way you want.

oh i know something. do you ever see the inside of the dragsters and they sometimes have the fire extinguishers mounted sideways behind the seat.

True, many automotive applications have weird mounting orientations, but those aren't neccesarily dry-chem extinguishers.

Anyhow, I think I'm gonna go ahead and mount it horizontally. There's a nice spot for it on the underside of the counter by the door.

Thanks for the input, guys!
