War Letters

With the current situation going on, an idea sparked in my head.

I've been writing to a 21 year old Specialist who is stationed with the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan for the past 3 months now. I just finished writing another letter to him. Typically, it takes 10 days for a letter to get to and from Afghanistan. Give or take a few.

It actually started off as an English class assignment, if you will. My English teacher has a friend whose husband is the Chaplain of the 82nd Airborne Division. So in early February our English teacher thought it would be a good idea if we wrote letters to the Soldiers. Well, of course we didn't have a clue who we were writing to, so it was hard to write a "personal" letter that was both original and Patriotic. I didn't want my letter to be boring. I guess it wasn't. The letters were randomly handed out.

I was hoping for a reply but wasn't really expecting one. But on March 14th, I received a reply. :) That day I was going to see Yanni live in concert. This just added to my fuel and excitment of the day.

So ever since then we've been writing back and forth. I have not heard back from him since early April. There's been word of casualties from the 82nd Airborne Division, so it's concerned me. But with the hostile environment they're in, time is crucuial. I understand he is unable to reply with such a job.

This leads to my point. Are any of you writing to Servicemen/Women stationed in Afghanistan/Persian Gulf/Iraq? If so I think it would be awesome to share what kind of news you're receiving.

STAY PATRIOTIC!

We had something like this when I used to live in Spain.

When the MARG would come in all the Commands on the base would set up a pavilion with food/drink/entertainment for the Marines either going on deployment or heading home from deployment. That way they would have something to do with their time

Not quite the same, but hey, the Marines had fun:)
