Right heres a quick story:

Me and Ash (GT_Fan2005) have just been discussing about the greatest movie ever, he said War Of The Worlds, I said Saving Private Ryan.

Now each have their good and bad points.

WOTW Is probably the finest 2 hours of movie ever, BUT it is also one of the worst endings I have seen in a long time.

Now, SPV has action emotion and determination, although like most war films, does drag on a bit. And why didn't they shoot Ben Afflic when they had the chance?!

So we are stuck, and not giving way, so we rest the decition on GTP's shoulders.

One of us is wrong, but who?

I agree with MistaX.

And you're both wrong, neither of these films can even come close to being considered for the title of 'greatest movie ever'.

Saving Private Ryan is the better of the two though.

OK so maybe not best film but still, which is better!!!!?

And @ MistaX:

^agreed  My god, War of the Worlds was laughable though.

Saving Private Ryan is one of my all-time favorites, but what about Braveheart vs Saving Private Ryan?

I would say Saving Private Ryan, but you can't forget the Fast and the Furious.

Actually, I think "Saving Private Ryan" does come close. It might be the best war movie ever made.

I agree, Saving Private Ryan is the best war movie ever made. But how can there ever be one "greatest" movie ever, when so much of whether you like or dislike a movie is completely unique to each individual? I think the Matrix Trilogy is one of the finest pieces of cinema ever created, but there are a whole slew of people who would not hesitate to disagree with me. Does that mean I should reconsider? Hardly.

So I ask, when this foolish poll is finished, will whoever loses change their mind and adopt the other's optinion? I certainly hope not, and thus I deem this poll useless.

And how can you ever compare Saving Private Ryan, a real dramatic film, to War of the Worlds, a sci-fi summer blockbuster with the stupidest plot twist of the new millenium? I loved WOTW right up until the end, then I hated it.

But again, what difference should my opinion make to anyone else?

yeah they're both terrible movies....

Saving private ryan was just "less terrible"...

Now..If there was a choice between Godfather and Citizen Kane..it might be more interesting

or perhaps....

Transformers the Movie Vs that 6 hours of cartoons tape you could buy at walmart back in the 90's

"Citizen Kane" is the most overrated movie ever in my book. :yuck: Godfather is a classic.

I thought Band of Brothers was the best wartime movie/series made yet.

I have that on DVD too. I don't consider it a movie, but great work non the less.

Yep I see all your points there but its just to finally settle this quite frankly.

But if a mod deems this useless then fair enough, they can close it if they wish.

Sorry, the best movie ever made is The Empire Strikes Back.

Best flick ever: "Raging Bull"

Best-ever performance by an actor: George C. Scott as "Patton".

Saving Private Ryan is better (not best ever) without a doubt.

The fact that anyone could think War of the Worlds (I assume we mean the Spielberg version) is the best ever is shocking. The fact that anyone thought it was a great film is a surprise even. I walked out of the theater at the end and kind of went, "eh." I didn't care about the characters, I wanted Tom Cruise to die because his character was a jerk, Dakota Fanning's character needed to die because she wouldn't shut up, the son should have been dead, and Tim Robbins' character was pointless. The stuck in the basement scene could have been done a million ways and Spielberg chose that one?

Everyone hates the ending. I want to clarify; are we talking about how the aliens die or about the fact that he finds his ENTIRE family? The aliens dying was true to the book and was the point of the entire story. The family reunited scene with the houses standing in the middle of the demolished city left a very, very, very, very, very bad taste in my mouth. I hope that gets my feelings across.

The only good things about this movie are that Tom Cruise had a cool car at the beginning and stuff blew up.

If you want a better remake of War of the Worlds that is properly updated watch Independence Day. At least they were thorough with their destruction of a city.

Well the alien part was kind of an anti climax, yes I know thats how it goes in the book but sigh it just suddenly stops, its ment to be a struggle right?

Now that family part, thats what makes the ending one of the worst i've seen in some time,

The son ran down that hill and suddenly there was a massive explosion, why the hell is he at the house now!!!?

And at your remark about Darkota, yeah agreed her character should have died just to give us some peace, but she probably gave the best performance in that movie.

That is the best war you can watch on your TV, it's not a film though it's a 10 hour long series.

As for the two choices in the poll, Saving Private Ryan is far better, War of the worlds was watchable but it's not a classic.

I rate many, many films above these two, well war of the worlds anyway, saving private Ryan is very high up in the list of great war movies, aliens v humans films though, Alien and Alien's win that category by a mile.

The entire story was intended to show how insignificant humans are to the universe, a point that was completely missed by the movie.

I'd rather listen to the radio drama.

...Everyone hates the ending...

I would love to ask Spielberg why the shields went down on the tripods.

The alien tripod pilots are getting deathly sick, right? So, are they up there in the cockpits yelling "Ack! I'm feeling terrible! Quick! Shields down! Shields down!!!"

Agreed...

These two films aren't in "Best Film" territory... Not even close...

I would say Saving Private Ryan is the better film of the two... WOTW (the new one) was one of the worst films I've ever seen...

;)

Saving private ryan for best "war movie"?
Or Saving private ryan for the best affects, and the biggest budget in a war movie?
SPR was good, but it was good because it had tanks..and explosions..and people getting shot..and people deing..it's story was actually very corny.....

best war movie...Platoon was a good war movie..if it wern't for charlie sheen....

Thin red line, any of the war movies in that "era"...vietnam movies tend to be a little better than WWII movies...except of course..
TORA TORA TORA!!!..

oh and we can't forget "d-day" with the germans speaking crazy german that sounded like they were drunk..."
ahha...

Full metal Jacket and the Thin red line are both a lot better than SPR imo.

Just a movie ploy so that we can see humans destroy at least one alien tripod. Spielberg didn't want to make humans look completely weak and useless, hence why he missed the point entirely.

Agreed. I had to have it shoved down my throat so hard and so many times while in university, and each subsequent time I watched it, I tried and tried to like it as much as everyone told me I should. But aside from its pioneering feats in cinematography, I loathe it. Rosebud my ass.

hahaha..that's where intelligence comes in handy..

make one very general very long report on tha movie..

then turn it in for every class that requires you to watch it

That is a strategy some may utilise, but aside from the fact that it doesn't work in university (especially thanks to turnitin.com) I have scruples that need to be upheld if I am ever to come to peaceful terms with my conscience.
