Formula 1 driver Esteban Ocon shared an impressive lap of Suzuka Circuit in Gran Turismo 7, posting the video to his Instagram story where it was subsequently re-posted to X by user @Tzuyutan_x. The clip quickly blew up, racking up over 1 million views in just two days...
 
Given what adorns the car of the team he drives for, I bet it was the Toyota one. It also would tie in well with both Toyota's current relationship with PD AND the Ambassador role Ocon has for Playstation France.

As mentioned in the article he seems to be a fan of the franchise and has even be named "Official GT Ambassador for France".
And maybe realism just isn't a priority for him. Not every F1 driver is like Max, I suppose.

Who cares?? Let the man enjoy the games he wants, he is a F1 pro driver and a GP winner, he has 0 things to prove to "real" sim racers

And that matters why? Guy is living the dream while being the ambassador for his childhood game, he can do what he wants without needing to prove himself to some weirdos obsessed with "Mah realism".

He likely just enjoys playing it for the joy of driving a wide selection of cars on a wide selection of tracks in a wide selection of scenarios that you can’t get elsewhere.

And he wouldn’t even be the only F1 driver to do so. Hamilton is a genuine fan of GT, and has a large room with full GT sim rigs for some sort of LAN setup that he can host at one of his properties in Colorado.

If I’m not mistaken Sainz and Gasly also have been seen playing it casually.

You don't knows what setup he was using. He could adjust everything, downforce, bigger turbo, whatever while top gt simracers were using BoP'ed cars. I don't think he is faster than world tour drivers. Even Max Verstappen isn't way ahead of other simracers

Yeah sure, F1 gp winner isnt faster than Kevin "Fat Croissant" Drumont. Ah, and surely close to the only driver who could humble Lewis Hamilton.

Not sure why that's necessary - and it's "Kylian".

Additionally, and for those at the back, Time Trials involve fixed (default) setups and default components as BOP is active, and the last Online Time Trial came before the downshift-spam prevention update. We don't know anything about this lap, other than it not being under the same conditions at all.

That's not to say that this isn't a very good lap, but it's also not comparing apples to apples, so to do so in such a weirdly aggressive manner in the comments on an article (an article in which the above is noted) is an at-best quite ignorant choice.

Both @Jordan and I raced Ocon in person at a GTWS live event, but not directly as he did his stint against the Pros (everyone else was Ams on Hard to start, Pros on Medium to finish). He wasn't overtly quicker than the good A+ streamers, and certainly not quick enough to trouble the finalists themselves - especially not his team-mate who was faster on Hards than he was on Mediums.

His team-mate being Kylian Drumont.

Thanks for the data. Im seeing a pattern with Kylians, they all tend to be very fast.
 
I'm only a filthy casual that only drives road cars using dualsense so my words don't mean anything, but that I didn't know those speed at those turns were possible. I guess it helps he's a damn pro and had driven the track in real life. I'm always too scared going over the limit lmao
 
A quick Google search tells me that Ocon has lapped Suzuka much quicker, last season he clocked a 1:29.507 in his Haas. So it probably felt quite slow for him!

Re: Gran Turismo Pro drivers... One is Valentino Rossi, from a comment made in a BMW video he used it to drive the Nordschleife.

Who says he doesn't? Pretty sure you don't have to devote your life to just one racing game. Besides, as a professional racing driver he get's plenty of real racing to experience, so being able to hop into a car and just enjoy driving, without having to tryhard the whole time, will surely be a welcoming change for him. Wouldn't be suprised if he plays it on race weekends after he's done with driving, team meetings, media meetings, sponsor events and so on and finally has some time for himself to relax.

Relax, most probably just a simple PR thing.

But I wonder why you are lingering on this simcade game forum ? If it is because you enjoy the game, maybe you could extend the courtesy to Ocon, maybe he did that because he enjoys GT. If not (if you don't enjoy the game) I wonder why you stay around.
