I'm pretty sure they knew from spectral analysis that it was water.

I think that until we actually set foot on Mars we are going to get hit with every finding as if it were big news. I swear everytime they find more ie at the poles everyone goes crazy. It isn't as if it proves anything more than ice found in the past. I love the pictures but it isn't something I didn't already know at this point.

I can see the next big headline: "Mars is red! See inside for photos."

Once we land a human on Mars the edia will drop it just as quick as they did moon missions. It is still a mystery and intriguing news until we actually walk on it. After that it is all old hat.
