Weekly Track Design Competition
Week 1

Ok, as it is the first week we will make it simple: You are to design your own track, a work of your own. Not a copy of someone elses, nor an edit of a real track.

The challenge
[+] Design your own race track
[+] The track may be any type of race track for any form of motorsport

Rules
[+] You must give credit for using anyone elses textures etc.
[+] The design itself must be your own work
[+] Please put FINAL ENTRY at the top of your completed work, so there is no confusion when I put up the poll
[+] If your image is larger than 500x500 pixels, please use a thumbnail (no bigger than 500x500) to link to the full sized image
[+] You can post pictures of your unfinished works if you wish
[+] Any imaging editing software may be used, as well as hand drawings
[+] You may provide a short description of the track. Things you may include are:
--Track length
--Description of any standout features of the track
--Description of a lap of the track
--Anything else you feel would add to the design
Competition ends Tuesday August 30, 2005

I've just added another rule I forgot to add previously.

If your image is larger than 500x500 pixels, please use a thumbnail (no bigger than 500x500) to link to the full size picture.

If you design the layout, yes. Like you pick what streets etc. you go through it's fine.

FINAL ENTRY

Street Circuit running through Melbourne's CBD, southbank, and botanical gardens. The southern most point of the track lays barely 500 metres from the northern most point of the Albert Park formula 1 race track. The track is designed with touring cars with no great amount of downforce in mind (i.e. V8 supercars :D )

The main straight runs east down Flinders Street, the start finish line right beside FLinders street station, turn 1 is a very fast down sweeper that dips downhill as you go through it, before the 90 degree turn 2.

Down Brunton avenue turn 3 is another fast sweeper, as competitors race past the MCG, the home of aussie rules football, which hosted the olympics in 1956, and will host the commenwealth olympics next year.

Turn 4 leads into the 90 degree turns 5 and 6. Heading back west down swan street, turn 7-8 is a slow right left chicane, before heading down the rest of the length of swan street, over the yarra river, alongside the Royal Botanical Gardens.

This leads into a fast tight right handed sweeper before a slow left right chicane. The 90 degree left handed turn 12 leads onto St. Kilda RD. It curves right then left before an Awkward braking run into the hairpin turn 13, before a tight left hander, a short straight and a 90 degree right turn onto kings way.

Followed by about 300 metres down the road yet another fast sweeper, the long straight then leads through the crown casino tunnel and out the other side over the yarra river.

The final section is 3 left hand 90 degree corners, before coming onto the pit straight, over the overpass, and roaring back down past Flinders street station to complete a fast, scenic, approximately 8.5 kilometre lap

FINAL ENTRY

Ok I will not be putting a lot of work into the tracks I only draw in what is needed, thats how I do my tracks. In other words tracks will be done simple.

Info:

CM is where the camera men film.
Com is where community people are based.
S is where public sit to watch.

Also this track can be for a mix of non dirt motorsports, but will mosty used by different bike and car non dirt motorsports.

On one of the parts of the track racers can choose weather, to race on the splited left or right enter and exits for that part of the track.

Here's a track I'm working on...

Drew this one up in Illustrator and then looked at it.... "say.... that kinda looks like High Speed Ring..." oh well...
Going to continue on and fine-tune it. Add start finish lines, corner Numbers, grades, length, etc.
It's a clockwise rotation only for the track.

Your input and suggestions are welcome.

I started last night but I totally screwed up the scale, so I'll start again in a few hours.

That looks really nice Mr. Toad 👍

Gald you like it Blake!
For some reason I don't know whether I'm designing a track 'for real-life driving' or designing a 'new' track for GT5, I keep wanting to add Photomode foxholes and a 'Copter Cam' route. I think I'm going to make it a GT5 track.

Looks challenging. Not one straight line in it :S Imagine how hard that is under hard braking/accelerating. Nice work.

Well, I was gonna do some elaborate **** until my stupid rendering program decided to be a ***** on me so I could only take screenshots.

I wanted to do a mix of stuff from various tracks like the corkscrew from Laguna and lots of power turns. In the end it just look like I made a friggin rollercoaster. :dopey:

Track length is approx. 2.5mi. long enough but not too long.

FINAL ENTRY

Thanks guys, I guess I should mention the elevation would look hilly like at Laguna Seca... not a track on pegs. You do get a good idea of elevation though. :dopey:

From the little mark on the bottom left... That's the start finish and you race towards the right. I wanted the turns to be equal of both right and left as well as fast and slow corners. The elevation changes also create a unique challenge and I included banked turns like at the Ring. :D

Okay Blake, here's my Final Entry

I think it's pretty well self-explanatory. If anyone has any suggestions, drop us a line.
Mr. Toads phone lines are open...

Nice Toad, I really like that stuff at the side, nicely done.

Well, here's my FINAL ENTRY

The track has 4 layouts, the full version (4km approx.), north circuit (2.5km approx), the south circuit (1.2km approx) and the middle circuit (1.8km approx). In theory this allows the track to hold two races at the same time, using the north and south circuits.

The full version, north circuit and south circuit are clockwise, while the middle circuit runs in a counter-clockwise direction.

This track is mainly designed for Touring cars so the description below is in a touring car of some sort.

As you drive past the start/finish line you shift to 6th gear and almost coast through the high speed right hander, only applying the slightest amount of throttle. As the corner starts to wind out you begin to depress the accelerator completely as you wind through 6th gear.

As you hit about 240kmh in 6th you brake and turn left for the slight kink before quickly unbalancing the car by jerking the car to the right to get through the double apex right hander.

As you wind through the gears you have to rest on about 50% throttle for the next left hander, only giving a quick burst of acceleration before braking for the esses.

After coming out of the final of the esses there is no time to get to full throttle before you must brake for a tight left hand hairpin.

On the exit of the hairpin you have a small chance to wind up before a high speed left hander, where you must again rest gently on the throttle.

Again, there is little chance to accelerate as this high speed corner leads straight into the slowest corner of the track, a tight right hand hairpin, this will be taken in first gear.

The hairpin leads to a right curve that leads to the next braking zone, for the right left chicane, quickly followed by a left right chicane, which is so tight that it is almost like two 1st gear hairpins.

This is followed by the most awkward section of the track, a corner with a very unusual kink which is taken at reasonably slow kink. A fast exit out of the kink is essential as it can be very punishing if the incorrect line is taken.

You then power through the gears again to complete the lap.

The poll will be up in about an hour so if anyone is going to submit any more entires make it quick 👍

Good luck!

Well Blake, it was worth the wait. Very nice design and well executed! Some difficult little corners in the North Course with some tough manouvering. I can see myself getting over-rotated (and out of course) quite easily (if I'm not careful) . 👍
Was it illustrated in Photoshop or other? Looks like Photoshop.

Was a bit confused at first as to how the tracks 'broke up' into two, but after looking closer, I now see it.

Now if you'd like to do more, I think I'm up for it. It really makes you think about 'the racing line'. It's an interesting exercise.

And on a side note (and I have to tell)... broke 90% in GT4 last night. Give me 4 months and I'll get the next 10.
