Last night when I fired up Shift on my PS3, there was very loud sound distortion while racing. This was the first time I have experienced this. At first I assumed it was a problem with my headphones, but it also happened through the TV's speakers, so I then assumed the speaker/amp was malfunctioning. Then I tried a couple of other games & the sound was perfect. Returning to Shift, the cracking distortion was still there, & nothing I could do to the audio settings could fix it.

Anyone have any ideas about what this might be caused by, or how to fix it?!

(There is no damage to the disc at all)

Was this during online racing? If so it could be someone's mic. Last night was the first time I heard people's mics come through the system sound. I had raced with others that had mics and never heard them (I don't have a mic) but last night during two races (same two players) I heard something like you described in the first race (which took me about 10 mins to figure out what it was) and in the second race I heard a static'y/crackle with the occasional echo'y voice.

The same thing happen to me during the tier 3. (Europe VS USA VS Japan) When I heard that most of the time the game had a major slowdown. Mostly happen to me on autopolis GP.

No, not online. Just playing offline. Nothing to do with internet connections or anything. Anyone encountered this on Shift (or any other game): loud crackling, distortion sound . It's so loud I can barely her my car's engine.

I am having a slight sound issue but it is not this. On rare occasions the sound volume will drop a significant amount even though I have not lowered the TV's volume. Has anyone else experienced this and/or know a fix for it?

I restarted, I tried other games, then restarted again - same problem. I guess I'm hoping "it will just go away", at some point, because I can't see any obvious cause for it.

Yeah, well that's the question: IS it a sound glitch (in which case I would expect somebody else to experience it) or some weird, freak occurrence?

Not sure if it is the same (also different platform PC), but I sometimes also have some sound issues (disstorted/softer).

I think mine is related to crashing (in to a barrier), restarting crashing in barrier again and another restart and it is gone, at least for me ;)

My wise friend jjaisli has sugested that it might be some degree of corruption of the game data. That seems like the most likely explanation to me. I'll have to see what steps I can take to remedy this.

Just wanted to update this:

Dr. jj solved the problem for me: he changed the audio settings of the PS3 from DTS to stereo. This seems to have eliminated the distortion completely. I still do not know why it would have worked for a couple of weeks on this setting & then developed this issue, but at least it is working for now.

My thanks to the Dr. 👍
